Adolin would at least hear out Dalinar before he left; he could not be sure that they would be able to speak again. As the meeting progressed red streamers rose from the ground circling around both father to son, anticipationspren betraying the mirrored nervousness. That was until Dalinar spoke up.
“Son, I can’t send you off without talking to you, not again.”
Adolin forced himself to unset his jaw and calmly spoke, “We are speaking.”
“Don’t be like that, please.”
There was pain in his father's voice that Adolin had only heard, or let himself hear, a few times. He seemed sincere, he really wanted to do this now. -

Diego pulled his car over to park on the sidewalk in front of what was formerly Fey & Co Law Offices, the grout was a macabre gray. He doesn’t know why the Japanifornia government regave him a driver's license. Alas he did have one; on one side of his license sat a photo of him, he could bring himself to look at it, on the other side, his license revealed his failings, it stated that he needed corrective lenses to drive. Diego was flooded with shame at the reminder of the clunk of metal that barred down on his nose and cheek bones. Corrective lenses was an understatement.

"Then why am I awake?"
Adolin isn't sure what answer to give. He's not calculating, not like Veil or his clever aunt or many, many of the girls he'd courted in the past. He just can't figure out what the truth is.
The truth is, Veil slipped out in the middle of the night and he's so aware she's gone that he can't sleep, either.
The truth also is that he's got an ambient, haunted sense in these halls even months after having taken Sadeas's life in them. Like blank stares are waiting in each brick-laid crevice.
The truth is, as well, that sometimes if Kaladin is too far away, he starts to feel like a flickering candle in the corner of Adolin's eye. Like he can't turn his head to see if it's sputtering out, or tipping and falling, setting the room alight in the process.
The truth he says is, "I can't sleep. And I'm bored."

“And a needle?” Adolin said, beaming and holding up the little sewing kit in a chubby hand.
Evi smiled.
“And a needle.”
(This started as a bit of indulgent hurt/ comfort, only to become a massive story involving murder, conspiracies, execution, Stormscience, offworld travel, spren politics, and the unforseen effects of simple compassion. It also provides real consequences for certain major canonical decisions that seemed to be swept under the rug.

Summary
Inspired by Chaper 12 of RoW. What if one of Shallan's truths were admitting her feelings for Kaladin to Kaladin? Canon divergent AU where, Veil comes to Kaladin instead of Adolin. It's a slow-ish burn because spren and the damnably honorable prude that is Kaladin Stormblessed. Most of Chapters 1-4 is Veil/Shallan/Kaladin lead up with some angst, feelings, puns, fluff, needling banter, and pesky spren thrown in. The dubious consent is pretty tame and is over by Chapter 2. The Shalladin smut really starts in Chapter 5 and the Kadolin smut starts in Chapter 9, and continues in Chapter 11, if that's why you're here, but there’s some gay panic, Adolin forces Kaladin to take a spa-level bath, and the spren become a scourge on human intimacy in between. Chapter 12 is mostly Shakadolin fluff and merciless puns.
