It was strange to her, even then. Like she was watching her birthday parties become these slow-motion nightmare snowballs of pressure and strain that would not stop rolling down the hill, and every year they just kept picking up more and more frosty baggage: having to split her birthdays between parents, running up against increasingly busy holidays, the themes growing less fleshed-out, less imaginative, less fun.
And it was probably naïve of her, but she guessed she'd hoped that by keeping a list she’d work out what had gone missing. Why the magic had steadily melted away, year by year.
She'd once thought, if she kept very close track, eventually she’d recapture it.

"Rose," it says.
"Don't come any closer."
She tries to make her words sound like a warning, but her voice is too unsteady. She straightens her spine, forcing herself not to cower, though she grips the strut for courage, trying to take refuge in the hum of the TARDIS. Do something, she silently pleads.
Aloud, she says, "If there's something you want—if you're in trouble—we can help you, just bring the Doctor back."
Lines deepen in the man's face as he frowns. But he stays where he is, to her relief.
"That’s very kind of you, but I am the Doctor."

“France,” she repeats, smile blooming in wonder. “This is France?”
“Where exactly did you walk from?” His laugh is less baffled than she might have expected.
“Long way off,” she replies. “I'm on a sort of… journey.”

Annie knew it was a cliché.
Friends to lovers, touching her waist in passing, accidentally falling asleep together, watching him walk out of the bathroom after a shower with a loose towel wrapped around his waist, kissing during a game of spin the bottle a little longer than necessary.
But he was so kind to her, and cared about her, and he smelled unfairly good; like vanilla and cedarwood. At first, she thought it was another Jeff situation, and she’d tricked herself into thinking that he felt anything for her, but he’s been touching her a lot more recently. He hugs her goodnight, sometimes, when she’s had a bad day. He puts a soft hand on her shoulder to get her attention. His grip on her waist is more firm when he passes her in the kitchen, or reaches over her for something in the cabinet. On movie nights, he doesn’t say anything when she moves from the arm of his chair to his lap and cuddles closer into his side. He just puts a loose arm around her and lays his hand on her hip.
