Liam’s hands went limp around his menu. That answer did not come from Connor.
Could it really be that…?
Yes, it’s me again, the distant voice continued on, sounding almost bored.
“I think I’m going to get a bowl of cereal. Maybe with some fruit on top if I’m really feeling wild.”
Liam looked up at Connor, smiling at his joke. Only to see that he’s not joking at all.
Oh no, that really is him feeling wild.
Wait, did he just hear the distant voice… snort?

Summary
Zayn is so close that Liam swears if he had better hearing, he’d be able to make out Zayn’s heartbeat. Not that Liam can do anything about their proximity–he’s all too aware of the fact that he can’t even move a centimeter back, his legs already pressed up against the table behind him. “You are so beautiful, and so smart, too. You’re gonna own the fucking world.” Zayn pauses after he gets the words out, gauging Liam’s reaction.
His eyes must flash distrust, disbelief, or a hybrid of the two, because Zayn continues, “I mean that.” He sounds so genuine that Liam wants to cry (a fact which he tries not to dwell on too much, hating himself for allowing Zayn to make him feel that way). “And I’m not just saying that to get in your pants.”
(Or, where Zayn is a flirt and Liam has the fun job of deciding whether any of it is real or not.)

Peering forward to get a better look, he spots a beautiful, raven-haired lad with a freckle in his sparkling, brown eyes. Somehow (he’s not even sure how it’s possible), he’d missed him before. He looks familiar, in a way--all the boys do--though Liam can’t place him.
He quirks his head slightly to the right as he squints, trying to figure out what in the hell is going on.
This movement brings the boy in the reflection a bit closer to Liam, and he uses this to his advantage, pressing what looks to be a soft kiss to his cheekbone.
Blushing fiercely, Liam’s body betrays him before his mind can catch up. He only turns redder as he realizes, forlornly, that of course he can’t feel the boy’s lips on his skin.
(Or, one day, Liam comes across the Mirror of Erised--but that’s not all he finds. Enter Zayn Malik, the raven-haired boy that he sees in the reflection in front of him.)

Summary
Every time he allows himself to reach into his wallet and chance a glance at the Polaroid, his memory still transports him back to the moment the light flashed. The endearing way the man had leaned forward just a bit to press a light kiss to Liam’s cheek, his slight bit of stubble tickling his cheek. The Polaroid encapsulated that exact moment, the bright look in both of their eyes, Liam turning slightly red but also grinning from ear to ear.
Now it just hurt to look at the photo, his eyes tracing the other lad’s scrawled signature over and over again: Zayn.
“I told you, it’s pointless, mate,” Liam bemoans, his voice giving off a twinge of sadness that he hadn’t meant to let out.
“No, no, it’s never pointless. New York isn’t that big,” Louis argues hurriedly.
(Or, where Louis attempts to play matchmaker and bring Liam and Zayn together again. He gets more than he bargained for.)
