“I’m taking Helsinki with me,” Berlín said in a serious tone and Mirko felt a cold shiver down his spine.
Berlín’s commanding voice was like flipping a switch inside Mirko’s brain. He was a soldier before he was old enough to be a man and he’s afraid that feeling wouldn’t never leave him, not completely.
“Andrés, are you sure?” the Professor sounded cautious, and Mirko could almost imagine his worried expression, maybe a finger pressing his glasses against the bridge of his nose. “Do you even know where he is?”
“Oh, he’s in Palermo,” Berlín replied in a smug voice. “I kept an eye on him.”
Andrés escaped the Royal Mint of Spain, but never contacted Martín, who thought his friend had succumbed to his illness.
For two years, Martín Berrote sat in his flat back in Palermo and mourned the death of his soulmate. Until the day Andrés showed up at his door with a Slavic giant by his side.

Summary
Martín realises that’s probably the first time he thinks of him as a professional and not just as one of Sergio’s misfits. Martín knows he shouldn’t be surprised, though. That man was a soldier in the Balkans. Five years ago, Andrés and him probably would have hired someone like Helsinki for their Plan.
(Andrés did hire him, Martín remembers, a sick feeling in his stomach. For the wrong plan, yes, but Andrés did pick him.)
