Summary
Due to severe traumatic experiences, alphas and omegas sometimes "detach". This means that their inner alpha or omega hides within the person and no one can reach them anymore. Detached people lose their scent, most of their instincts and their fertility until they can heal enough for their inner selves to feel safe being out there again. Until then, there's a part of them that's always missing, always dying.
It takes years for a detached person to "reconnect", if they do it at all. Some might never recover, some might never feel complete again. There are wounds that go too deep, things you can't ever forget, places you can never quite leave.
They all knew that that was something that could happen, that this world could be so cruel it could fundamentally break a person. They all knew the risk and accepted it, moving towards the certainty that one day they would look into a civilian's or a college's empty eyes and just know. They would see a troubled look lost a thousand miles away expressing all the desperation that the scentless air couldn't. And they would feel like the biggest failure of a hero.
They knew it would happen someday.
They just, didn't expect it to be so soon.
