Porém, ela ainda mantém sua personalidade curiosa e excêntrica e planeja trabalhar lá até o fim de seus anos de servidão, sem chamar a atenção de ninguém. Um dia, após ouvir rumores de que os filhos do imperador estão gravemente doentes, ela começa a investigar a causa, usando sua experiência como apotecária, e resolve com sucesso o mistério de sua doença. Mesmo que ela pretenda permanecer anônima, suas ações acabam chamando a atenção de um eunuco influente, e logo ela se vê resolvendo vários mistérios para a corte real.
