Summary
Late March, 514 - Kabru, a young half-elf recovered from the Western Continent and adopted into the House of Tol, has managed to secure one of his longest-held ambitions: An appointment with a Dungeon Investigation Unit. Though his age and ignoble blood limit him to service as a page to the squad's enigmatic captain, he's determined to make the most out of what he believes is his best opportunity to help prevent the tragedy that continues to haunt him from recurring. He expects to win his new comrades over in time, his mother expects him to come flying home when faced with boredom and danger. No one expects the little island to which they've deployed to be boiling over with monsters by the time they arrive. But that's what's happened.

It took courage not to recoil as the figure drifted close, its white shroud billowing like smoke to the night air as it stood before him. Kabru willed his hand to rise, his fingers brushing against the thing’s freezing cheek, just beneath the hollow where an eye ought to have been.
“Are you hurt?” he whispered, breath caught in his lungs as the creature's lips curled.
“Your hand trembles."

Summary
When Fleki’s familiar fails to arrive, Kabru and Mithrun must continue to wander the lower levels of the dungeon, encountering monsters, getting to know each other, and eventually running into the Touden party.
Can Kabru successfully play mediator between a Canary captain and a party that used black magic? Will Senshi’s cooking change Kabru’s mind about monster cuisine? And just what is Kabru supposed to do about his developing affection for Mithrun? Is that affection returned, or is that more wishful thinking?
