    Summary

After reincarnating into a different, yet all the more corrupted world, Takasugi lived on. Things won't be alright, and of course happiness isn't real-- but he lives on anyways as a member of the Whitebeards, because one lifetime of wallowing in regret and misery is long enough.

Even in another world, Takasugi and Gintoki prefer fighting each other to drinking with each other.

“Maybe I should plot world domination again,” he sighs.

“You can’t do that,” Whitebeard calls up at him, “it’s almost time for dinner.”

“Shush for a bit, Oyaji, this is important,” Takasugi waves a foot at him, “for fuck’s sake I only came on board because I thought there’d at least be Yakult on another island. Now it’s been thirty years, what am I /doing/?”

“What’s going on with Taka?” someone asks.

“Sometimes, he thinks he’s still a temporary member. It happens sometimes, since he's so old. You just have to tolerate it when it happens.”

    “He’s literally Second Mate?”

“Yes, exactly. But be patient with your brother, alright?”

    -

But when they did find each other– their blades froze, and the single moment of falter nearly cost each other their lives.

“TAKA! Focus!” Marco yells, barely deflecting a thrown dagger that had gone for his eye.

“Hey, that would’ve been bad, Gin!” Rayleigh hisses, having shoved the boy’s head down, right out of the way of a bullet.

    -

“Taka…?” Marco turns– this is out of character for him. He rarely ever fights– but there he was running for it without even a bit of hesitation. “Taka!”

Eyes turned. The Whitebeards were looking. Some were directing their attention over, alarmed.

“Wait, Gin!” Rayleigh calls, “that guy’s not someone you should take alone!”

    -

They were covered in wounds and bruises and littered with near-mortal wounds– but neither the Whitebeards nor the Rogers could do a thing about it.

They both looked the happiest they’ve ever been in their lives.

    Summary

“Get up. We’re walking west until we either collapse and die or we find some idiotic sop willing to give us food,” he says, and drags himself up despite the increasing white spots in his vision. “Unless you can’t do it,” he says, and there’s a weird sort of relief in hearing the scrape of twigs as Gintoki hauls himself up and rises to the challenge.

An exploration of an alternate universe where Takasugi and Gintoki somehow end up being the world's worst roommate duo after the unfortunate Shouyou incident. Also, Katsura is there.

The sword is at its apex when Gintoki tilts his head back and exposes his neck further, and the anger from that action fuels his rage—except this time, it’s to lower his sword.

“You fucking asshole, you think I need your help to kill your pitiful ass?” he spits, and Gintoki drags himself upright at that, eyes flashing again.

“Oh, so now I can’t even be murdered in peace? Rich boy has to find fault with the way I die too?” he fires back, and Takasugi can hear the rattle of likely cracked ribs as he draws in breath to yell back.

    -

“I’m waiting for you to stop fucking talking and kill me,” Gintoki says, and it just pisses him off more.

“I’m not letting you fucking martyr yourself and dodge responsibility like you always do,” he spits, and lobs a rock vaguely in the direction of Gintoki’s broken ribs. Judging by the gasp, he’s dead on. “You better spend the fucking rest of your miserable life atoning for what you did.”

    -

“Gin-san, can you tell Takasugi-san to move so I can vacuum? I’d tell him myself but I’m kind of scared if I ask him to stop watching dramas with Kagura-chan they might both kill me,” Shinpachi asks, and Gintoki removes the Jump imprinted onto his cheek to blearily blink up at him. “Gin-san, did you even hear anything I just said?”

“Sure, sure,” he yawns. “Takasugi! Kagura! Stop fucking watching swill and get off the damn couch!” he yells, and they both steadfastly ignore him. “Oi! Moron! Shouldn’t you be setting a better example?” His bokutou goes flying at Takasugi’s head, and Takasugi smoothly smacks it back. “Get up!”

“Shut up, Gintoki,” Takasugi says, and it’s the same venom he always has but it’s a lot less effective after a decade of being forced to share an apartment with him. “Or I’m recording over your tapes.”

“Nevermind, Shinpachi, just let them go at it. I’m not losing those recordings,” he says, and Shinpachi sighs in exasperation. “I’m going back to sleep. Wake me up if those two ever decide to value their IQs.”

There’s a new voice that answers the phone whenever clients calls the Yorozuya; a deep, calm baritone that’s unlike the three known members‘ voices.

“Hello? Yes, this is the Yorozuya; Takasugi speaking.”

    -

“Gin-san has seemed more unburdened these days, no?” She asked, seemingly out of nowhere.

“Aneue...” but a glance at his sister had Shinpachi shaking his head and reluctantly leaving the room. “I’ll refill the tea.”

When the door slid close, Tae continued. “As much as we may not like it, we do think it’s partially because of Takasugi-san that Gin-san became like that.”

    “...”

“We all love Gin-san, and even though he’s an idiotic lazy perm-head, he’s helped us all in some way. And we all agree that Gin-san deserves to be happy, no?”

She smiled, and this time, the threat wasn’t disguised as something sickly sweet.

“So please do keep Gin-san happy and refrain from hurting him. We wouldn’t want to hear of any horrible news, after all.”

Takasugi smiles. It was just a quirk of the lips, and yet, Tae knows it’s wholehearted sincerity.

    “Wouldn’t dream of it.”

    Summary

"Speaking of soulmates..." Gintoki started, side-glancing at him.

Hijikata felt his eye twitch as Gintoki started squirming next to him. "Just spit it out already!" he exploded, turning to glare at him.

"Well, you see, Gin-san's been awfully curious about something lately, and I was wondering if you-"

"You want to see how much time you have left, don't you?" he interrupted.

Gintoki stared at him sheepishly, a grin forming on his mouth. "I mean, can you blame me? Don't you wanna know how much time you have left?"

As he grabbed Gintoki’s hand, he glanced down and blinked, doing a double-take.

“C’mon, Hijikata-kun, what’s taking you so long? It’s just a number, don’t be afraid of it. Or is it so huge that you can’t even understand how long it is? Is Gin-san gonna be immortal?!” A wide grin stretched on Gintoki’s lips, his eyes sparkling.

“Oh, good, seems like you have one year left to live.” He stated and dropped Gintoki’s hand.

“What?” Gintoki’s face fell, “What do you mean ‘good’?! Oi!”

He snorted and then got up from the bench, facing ahead. “Calm down, idiot, I was kidding. You have sixty-five years left to live— too many years for a reckless asshole like you, if you ask me, but I guess I have to accept it.” he glanced over his shoulder at Gintoki, ”I guess congratulations are in order, loser.”

Gintoki leaned back, flashing him a wide smile. “I hardly would consider myself a loser when I get to spend all those sixty-five years annoying you until we’re both old and wrinkly.”

Hijikata merely grunted, causing Gintoki to let out a bark of laughter and turned his head towards the front. He stepped foot into the busy streets of Edo, blending with the crowd, hoping that no one would notice his erratic breathing and his body shaking like a leaf.

His mind was haunted by the glaring numbers of /365/ written on Gintoki’s wrist.

    Summary

    “So, this the culprit?”

A man with silver hair, a permy one at that too, enters the dojo with another person beside him. Instantly, copious amount of Shinsengumi troops calling ‘Fukucho’ in unison. Suddenly the crowd makes a distance, creating a circle with him in the middle. Suddenly Hijikata becomes very aware of where he’s kneeling.

“Oi! Hell—Let go!! Bastard!!!” Hijikata trashes in the Vice-chief’s grip but the man just easily drags him out of the dojo.

“As expected of a true sadist.” Sougo makes room for the Vice-chief and his baggage to pass.

“The rest of you, return to your post, or /else/.” His tone remains monotonous but the reaction of the Shinsengumi is something to behold. E

veryone instantly snaps then scatters. That sight makes Hijikata’s stomach churns. He’s heard of the man, of course he has. The infamous White Demon of Shinsengumi, their Vice-commander. His swordsmanship is said to be unparalleled. No terrorists, be it human or Amanto, stands when facing him.

    -

“His strength draws a lot of people into the Shinsengumi, a lot of people want to be his disciple, even to be in the same battlefield with him seems enough to some. That man, when he fights, it instills fear to both the enemy and his comrades.” A shiver runs through Hijikata. It’s hard to associate that dead fish look with something so… that. “But he never takes a disciple, or teach a lesson in the dojo, ever. The Commander is the only one to have ever sparred with the man.”

    Huh?

“Okita-san actually idolizes the Vice-chief, but even he has never clashed swords with the man.”

    What?

“Don’t take it to heart, Hijikata-san. Captain Okita is just a little jealous, that’s all.”

    -

“When I first found him, he was sleeping on piles of trash in the alley at the back of the barracks.”

Kondou’s eyes widen slightly before relaxing into a knowing smile.

    “So you brought him in.”

    Gintoki doesn’t say anything.

“Just like how you brought him to my dojo back then.” Kondou leans back, propped by his arms.

It was in the middle of winter, Gintoki came to his dojo again. It wasn’t unusual for the man to drop by whenever he’s in town, but what’s new was the other person he was carrying with him. Injured and unconscious, the Shiroyasha brought the raven boy to Kondou’s dojo. The silver-haired samurai only stayed briefly to drop the kid before leaving for the battlefield again. Hijikata didn’t wake up to see his true savior, he only woke up to Kondou nursing his wounds.

“He still has that bokuto that you left him with.”
