Sirius had never expected to watch his mother die.
Sure there had been times, when he was locked in his room nursing broken bones and bloodied bruises, that he had fantasized of her dropping dead with a thud on the hardwood floor. Yet to actually see it, her wide eyes staring at him in abject horror, only to close as she shuddered out a squelching gurgle and fell to her knees, was an entirely different game.
Ball park, Moony might have said, but Sirius was trying to focus on the present.

I don’t know how long I’ve been sleeping, but it must have been long enough for people to have forgotten.” The stag finished the last of the berries and stared at George wonderingly. George chuckled, plucked another handful to offer to it, and continued, “I’d gone to sleep tired. And I wake up tired. Tell me, do you think that’s fair?”
The stag, because it was a stag, did not reply.
But George didn’t mind that, either.
