He flew too high, fingertips grazing the blistering edge of the sun. For one trembling second, he thought he’d made it, until the heat stole his wings, left him to plummet into the eternal darkness. Light did not guide him out, only the cold certainty that the man he’d called Father had never been his, and the weight of knowing he’d failed the one person who mattered most. Over and over, his mind lingered on the fragments of what he could have done differently, if he’d only listened to Gallagher, if he’d dared to open his eyes and see the dream for the lie it was.
The Penacony incident was supposed to be the end of that chapter, a clean slate. Sunday’s place on the Astral Express had felt like proof that he'd made it out intact, like maybe there was something left to salvage.
But ghosts never stay buried for long, do they? He should’ve known better.
He thought he could outrun it all.

“Jane,” Seth protested, feeling harassed over his behavior from when he didn't know she was a plant. Her eyes still hadn't lifted from his mouth.
“My hero,” Jane sighed, then finally looked back up at his eyes. His breath shuddered at the starving look on her face, the way she leaned even more into him so that he could feel nearly every plane of her torso over his own. She placed her hands on his chest and looked up at him plaintively. “Won't you let me thank you? Show my gratitude?”

All hell breaks loose on the Astral Express shortly after, as Welt comes to the realization he is not the only one with secret interests tucked away. With only a taste of his desires, a man once content with nothing is soon parched for merely the possibility of what could be with the young woman that keeps him on his toes.
Tl;dr Stelle has Topaz pick up an erotic book for her, Welt ends up with it, and both good and chaotic times are to be had that night on the Astral Express. Kafka still starts a book club and Blade did not want to participate.
