    Summary

Odysseus knows he is being foolish. If he’s allowed to have a connection to a single Olympian, here on this Tartarus attempting to disguise itself as Elysium, it would make more sense for him to choose Lord Hermes, who has aided him before.

(It has been a year, and yet he still pines for home. Calypso has grown tired, and thinks that granting him a single god’s attention would sate him—as if anything could sate him but going home and seeing Penelope, meeting Telemachus again for the first time in thirteen years.

Gods. His boy is fourteen now).

And yet, when the Goddess Calypso demands to know who he will take on, as his one deity, he finds himself saying, “Athena.”

(OR: Athena finds herself missing Odysseus enough to check on Telemachus earlier and is therefore convinced to look in on Odysseus earlier, only to find that she can't reach out to him unless Calypso allows it. A year later, Calypso agrees to let him have a connection to a deity of his choosing. He chooses Athena, because some part of him will always think of himself as hers.)

OR OR: the "Odysseus pretends to date Calypso to buy Athena time to get him off Ogygia" AU that got far more serious than I thought.)

    Summary

Sing, o muse, of the guile of Athena, bright-eyed, triple-born, winner of the game,
sing of the wrath of Zeus, warlike, king of the Gods, of the flashing bolt, keeper of oaths,
and sing of Odysseus, shifty, man of many ways and of many sorrows; keeper of bright-eyed Athena.

Athena played Zeus' game and won. But the king of the Gods doesn't take kindly to losing. While it's true that Goddesses can't die, that doesn't mean they can't suffer. And Zeus has a far more creative punishment in mind than simple lightning bolts.

On Ogygia, Odysseus has just been told that he is free to leave. But in this version of the story, Hermes delivers more than a message to the king of Ithaca - he delivers a woman. A mortal woman, bound to Odysseus, forced to join him in his desparate quest to return home.

(Or: after the events of 'God Games', Zeus strips Athena of her immortality, and sticks her with that mortal she's apparently become so attached to.)

    Summary

    Odysseus looks at the map.

    He looks out the window.

He looks at the map again.

“This,” he says at length, “cannot be the way.”

He risks a glance at Athena, who is white-knuckling the steering wheel, unblinking eyes fixed on the road ahead. It takes a brave man to tell the goddess of wisdom she’s wrong. It takes a braver man still — or perhaps just a foolish one — to do so from the passenger seat while she’s driving.

    Summary

Athena scoops up a handful of sand, letting it slide through her fingers in a crude imitation of an hourglass. She’s been sitting on the beach — or what passes for a beach on craggy Ithaca — for the past hour, watching the waves crash against the rocks. The tide’s coming in. If she doesn’t move soon, the sea will catch her, will wash over her and drag her out into deeper, colder waters. She wouldn’t mind. She could just float for a while. Like a jellyfish, drifting and aimless, rocked to and fro by the waves. Remarkable animals, jellyfish. They have survived for eons without a brain.

It’s a comforting thought, and a terrifying one.

    ***

Six weeks on from God Games, Athena is forced to contend with the fact that getting back to normal will take longer than she anticipated.
