Summary
The first year of the settlement in the stronghold, there had been a lot of sleepless nights for most of the month of December, and it culminated at the turn of the year. Techno remembered making tense rounds with coffee for those staying on watch for claim attempts or aerial attacks. Now that the Empire was theoretically at peace, staying up around the clock had become one of the new traditions they were inventing together. The day was a combination of shared empire experience, Nether end-of-year traditions, and avian longest-day practices for the holiday that had just passed. Neither tradition had quite fit, so they had combined them all. And Techno had forgotten the whole schedule in favour of the conversation he wanted to have with his co-emperor. His hand went into his pocket, fingering the velvet bag he had there. “Uh,” he started. “Phil.”
Phil looked at him, eyes twinkling below the brim of his hat. He made an inquisitive noise.
Techno took a deep breath. “So,” he started.
“Hey, Phil!” Someone yelled across the courtyard.

Summary
The glade is worse than overgrown, more overrun with nature. The grass and weeds grow past his ankles. Vines creep up the statue itself, curling around its stone leg. Interestingly enough, while the base and the sword are chipped and cracked, the person itself, while dull and unpolished, is completely unblemished.
Clearly, this place has been undiscovered for a long, long time.

With a shake of his head, he pulls in a lungful of air. “Not after what happened with Wilbur. I refuse to put myself through that again, I’m sorry.”
He begins to walk away, his back to Phil when the blond calls out firmly, “Techno, I don’t think you understand. The world is coming to an end.”
