Summary
The eye of a cyclone is the most peaceful place during the storm and that was exactly how I felt next to him; being anywhere near him was the calmest moment of the day for me and yet the most hazardous for my feelings.
aka: My version of Mai's point of view adding some background to his character and his feelings for Jade. No major spoilers to the actual plot.

Summary
Letting himself be happy was not something Jade knew how to do -- it was not something he was good at -- and frankly, it was not something he thought he deserved. He had tried to protect himself from the familiar pain of rejection by distancing himself, but that wasn't fair to Mai. Mai deserved to know the truth, even if the outcome would slice Jade clean through.
"Jade had always known it would come to this – he knew from the very second he recognized Mai’s flirting, from the moment he realized he wanted to be special because Mai was special. Jade knew it would end in heartbreak. That’s why he had done so much to avoid it. Avoid admitting it, avoid dealing with it, avoid facing it."
