“Oh, I dunno,” Dan admits. “It just makes me think. This place used to just be concrete, y’know?” He kicks at the dirt beneath his feet. “Paving slabs, all over. Took ‘em a while to tear it all up, apparently. To make this place what it is. I guess I just like the idea of it. That we built this with our own hands. And that even in the worst of it – even if it gets really, really bad – we won’t lose this. Not until the end. It’s right at the heart of this place. If the infected get this far in…this will be it.” He pauses, for a moment. “The last lot of us will probably die right here.”
“That’s…a bit morbid,” she replies, not quite sure what to say.
Dan shrugs. “Yeah, well. Blame the zombies.”

Her other arm found its target quickly, although to her surprise, it was only one man. She flicked her wrist, and a small knife was propelled from its hidden spot in her gauntlet just in time for the man's eyes to find her and his mouth to open in surprise.
