Summary
Spencer has issues. He tries to cope in a way other than Dilaudid, butttttttt... let's just say it doesn't work out well. The team tries to help but spencer wouldn't let them, so for a long time, he suffers alone. This fic will dive into the depths of mental illness and its effects on everyday life, but shown through our favorite character, spencer. The story takes place after spencer gets clean, but when the craving comes back, he finds alternative ways to cope.

Summary
The heat is overwhelming once back in the car, but Kevin bears it only for the shivering form in the backseat. He keeps an eye on him, glancing into the rearview as often as he can while maintaining safety as he drives, but Peralta never notices. Raymond's coat is almost comically large on him—the sleeves hanging over his palms and the shoulders too wide for the young man's smaller frame. It would be reminiscent of a little boy playing dress up in his dad's clothing if it weren't for the fact that Peralta is not only an adult, but one that they had found near frozen on a bench in the middle of the night. His head is down, wet hair dripping rivulets onto his face, and his arms are wrapped tightly around his body like a lonely hug.
It's such a pitiful sight that Kevin feels something inside of him crack. Raymond's hand, still a little cold from being outside, slips into his and squeezes.
“You know,” Peralta's voice cuts through the silence of the car, “my dad showed up again.”Or
Jake's dad returns and causes an upheaval in his life that no one is sure he can come back from.

Spencer Reid has never had it easy. He struggles with obsessive-compulsive disorder and autism on a daily basis, masking at work so his colleagues don't see him as weak. It seemed like a highly necessary plan; pretend at work, never let them see who he really was.But after years of bottling up emotions, he picked up several unhealthy coping mechanisms. Not long after he managed to kick his dug addiction, he returned to his oldest-learned mechanism: self-harm.
After several weeks of worrying behavior and an especially triggering case, Derek Morgan asks to stay the night to make sure his friend was okay, and Spencer regrettably agrees. And then his whole world is turned upside-down.

This was created after I realized how unrealistically these topics are portrayed in many other fics. There is a dire need for a realistic explanation of addiction, recovery, and the ups and downs of real life, and I decided to give that to the AO3 world. That being said, keep in mind: it is hard, gritty, and painful. But, just like life, things do get better in the end.- Language:
