Summary
“There was a meeting,” Nicky says. “In a field. I remember walking there, but then-” Nicky shakes his head. “It’s just flashes of hell for… for a really long time. Sparrow? How long have I been gone?” Nicky’s eyes rake Sparrow up and down and Sparrow looks his age on a good day, but today, hungover and unshaven, he must look to the long gone Nicky like the crypt keeper.
“Nine years,” Sparrow says.

Three months after the Doodler returned home the Kiddads are surviving in various states of functioning. Sparrow's being walled off by his kids, Grant's numb, Lark's getting his life back together after a full blown meltdown, and Terry can't seem to pull himself away from his favorite crutch, work. It's in the midst of this turmoil that an old friend comes stumbling back into their lives. Nicky is back, and apparently with no memory of the betrayal or the nine years following.

“Normal?” Scary asks into the mirror. “Got any words of encouragement here?”
Normal catches her eye. He feels put on the spot. He feels shoved into a box he’s not sure he belongs in anymore. But he’s needed right then, to be something like optimistic. They're going to have to go into school at some point. He sits up straighter and breathes in.
“Welp, I mean- I guess. Let’s do this!” He puts as much pep into the words as he can. It might not be as upbeat as it used to be, but it’s enough of a light under them to get them all to grab their bags and get out of the car.
The sun is low on the horizon, rising yellow. Rising, not opening. The day has barely begun.

Nicky swirls his beer around in its glass and raises an eyebrow.
“Okay?” He looks moderately interested, but he also looks like he’s humoring two drunk people...He is.
“I can make out with Lark,” Cass says.
