    He was there when Deku jumped.
    He saw it happen. His body had fallen for only a few seconds before it hit the pavement, and Bakugo had just… stood there. Frozen. Deku's blood had splattered across his face, warm and sticky, the metallic tang filling his nose. For the first time in his life, Bakugo had no words. No snide remark, no explosion to throw, no sneer of contempt. He’d just watched. And when it was over, he stood there staring like it didn’t mean a damn thing.
    But it did.
    The dream he’d had since childhood—to become the number one hero, to stand at the top—hadn’t gone away. But now it was poisoned, tainted by that damn nerd. The title wouldn’t mean what it was supposed to
    When he reached his goal, when he stood at the pinnacle of everything he’d ever wanted, he’d pray for forgiveness. He’d pray to be a better person in the next life, to not be the one who drove his childhood friend to the edge
    And then he’d take a swan dive off the nearest roof

    Bakugou Katsuki could not tell you when the first occurance of this peculiar addition to his life was. He simply could not say with any semblance of confidence.

    He suspected it happened before he became aware of it, even. The start - a nebulous point in time. One where there was a before, and one where there was an after.

    Before, when he slept alone in his bed. Mostly resting peacefully.

    And after, when Midoriya Izuku began to slip into bed beside him. With his careful scarred hands that laid softly on Bakugou’s chest.

     

    Making sure he was still breathing.

     

    Checking that his heart was still beating.

    ___

    Bakugo thinks he’s doing okay in the aftermath of the war.

    Until he starts waking up to Deku sitting on his bed, hand pressed against the place Katsuki’s heart stopped beating once, and realizes that -

    Maybe he’s not the only one not doing okay, after all.

    After his kidnapping, Izuku struggles. He’s meek and quiet, violent, nothing as he was.

    The mumbling Katsuki always complained about, becomes something he begs for. In rough, scarred hands he holds Izuku’s face and tries very hard to be gentle.

    There’s a dread that nibbles at his gut.

    Izuku has lost something, clearly. Katsuki thinks that maybe, just maybe, if he can get in close enough he can slot back in the missing piece.

    Katsuki clutches the award in his hands, and stares out amongst the mass of eyes watching him. They want one thing, and it’s reassurance.

    Katsuki is not their man.

    “There’s a lot I’m already doing. I don’t need to say it, and I don’t need to wait to be higher in the ranks.” Katsuki answers, strong. This is not his intended answer, and his PR team is going to give him the ass-whooping of his life once he steps off stage. He clears his throat, and promises:

    “I’m reopening the search for Japan’s saviour, Deku. Join me or don’t, I don’t care, but I’m bringing him home.”

    With that, he turns and walks away. There’s a rumbling roar of the crowd that follows him.
