When he tells people that he is a ghost hunter, people tend to be far more impressed than they ought to be, really.
Usually, really, the ghosts aren’t malicious. They are just drifting; they are scared, alone, in turn waiting for what comes next and trying to hold onto their long-lost life. They need someone to be brave for, and Merlin is content to be that person.
Not this ghost, though. This ghost screams bloody murder at Merlin’s attempt to help him move on to the afterlife.
“I have been here for a thousand years,” the ghost tells him. He pouts, and it makes his otherwise proud face look a bit ridiculous. “I don’t see why I should leave. I think you should leave.”
Or: Merlin is a ghost hunter. Arthur is a ghost. There really shouldn't be anything more to it, but Arthur's inability to move on makes Merlin's job a tad harder than it ought to be. Oh, and then there's the part where he's falling in love with a thousand-year-old ghost who keeps insulting him.

At this Arthur’s features turn harsh. “I’m your son - of course, I’ll deserve it.”
Helpless in the face of Arthur’s anger, he turns away but makes one last gesture towards Arthur. A sign to follow him. He thinks about Arthur’s words; prays that Arthur’s fate isn’t predetermined - doomed due to bloodline and the sins of a father.

He took this job for the paycheck, and he stayed for the show's cute but unavailable paranormal investigator. Three years into filming the show, Merlin is shocked to find an actual, real life ghost on one of their visits. Arthur Pendragon is the most stubborn, obnoxious ghost Merlin has ever met, and he's determined to convince Merlin to bring him back to life. Unfortunately, necromancy is no easy task. Along the way, feelings get muddled and things get... complicated. More complicated than bringing a prat back from the brink of death.
The title is inspired by Khalid's song of the same name.

When running a private detective agency, you expect a little bit of excitement and drama. But you certainly don’t expect death. After Arthur is killed in a strange accident one night, Merlin can’t help but think that there's more to it than meets the eye. Now he's stuck with a ghost for a partner, and time is running out for Arthur to resolve his unfinished business before he ends up trapped here for good. It's up to Merlin to help him figure things out so that he can cross over, but that's easier said than done when there's a murderer on your tail.
