It was then a dark figure stood up from within the bushes, not bothering to conceal itself any more. Akaashi’s breath caught in his throat, heartbeat accelerating as the figure stared him down. It was apparent the person was bulky and large, even from the several yards between them. Akaashi felt his back graze the patrol car and he gasped at the slick, cool feeling as if he had been forced up against it unexpectedly.
The figure bowed its head a centimeter, then stalked through the bushes and out onto the street.

Which is why when his parents told him they were going on a kayaking tour to see manatees, he immediately tried to opt out. ‘You won’t even get in the water,’ they said. ‘It won’t be that cold,’ they said. All assuming that he didn’t tip out of the kayak the second he got into deeper waters.
