The first thing Lettie, Anne, and WD agreed on was that they did indeed live in a world where magic existed. Although scholars and scientists tried to cobble over everything with their carefully reproduced experiments and archives of research, the brighter illumination generated by this age of logic and industry only cast darker shadows where the true mysteries of life dwelled. Witches lived. Tarot cards could tell the future. Ghosts of the departed could be called forth by spirit mediums. And yes, an offended street magician with enough innate talent could most certainly have cast a vengeful spell on a certain pompous ringmaster.
