    “You’re staring at me”, he told him that evening at dinner.

    “I know”, Percy replied. He felt ridiculous.

    “You’ve been staring at me a whole lot lately”.

    Percy just nodded. And kept staring.

    “Care to tell me why?”

    He could have said so many things - something to deflect and play it off, some half-assed excuse that would make him appear like the biggest loser ever, maybe even something that was cool enough to woo Nico back and sweep him off his feet.

    Instead, what came out of his mouth was, “You’re pretty”.

    Which was ridiculously humiliating and also didn’t even touch the surface of what Nico looked like and the effect he had on Percy. But it was better than telling him he was having a hard time holding back from jumping on him right there and then, at least.

    Domestic, strange. Beautifully familiar.

    Percy was at the counter, humming a tune under his breath as he made breakfast for both of them. The coffees were already almost done, and Nico knew he would have brought them to bed for him in just a few minutes.

    The morning sunlight coming from the window bathed everything in a blurry glaze, like the scene could disappear if Nico as much as raised his fingers to try and touch it.

    Strange. Strange that Nico didn't feel like it really would disappear under his eyes. Strange that it felt like Nico could trust it to stay there, that he would wake up again and again to this same picture.

    His heart didn't have enough space anymore in his ribcage.

    the nietzsche line goes like this: what is done out of love always takes place beyond good and evil. nico knew what that meant. knew that love was a bloodthirsty monster. boundless. knew that love could make a monster out of him like that, too. he just didn't think that percy would be so capable. 

    but then again, it's percy. there is nothing monstrous about percy. 

    ‘sometimes, i imagine dying and it feels like driving home’, the girl in wollan’s poem said. nico thinks that home is an abandoned smokestack fuming with ghosts and that driving there is much the same as returning to the grave he should never have been birthed from. nico thinks that home is a slaughterhouse that sliced him open and stuffed him full of ice to snuff out what little potential for fire he had.

    Needless to say, it's not the last time Percy will get abducted by this particular dragon and what started out with bickering soon leads into friendship and then... so much more.

    so far, summer isn't exactly going to plan. or, well, it is, it's just maybe not the kind of summer plan normal teenagers put together.

    it’s almost like the final moments, sort of. sitting alone in his ol’ ma’s car with his dog, knowing that if things go right, this will be the last time he’s ever in it. the catera is far from the only thing he has of his mother. it’s not like this is his last tie. but this car had been a big part of her life – the drives to and from work, the drives to pick him up from school when he’d gotten suspended, the drives to the hospital whenever gabe had gone too far. there’s still a dark patch on one of the seats from where his headwound wouldn’t stop bleeding. a stain in the boot from where a sharp turn had a pack of beer bottles smashing together and pouring out. some of it’s fond. percy’s not sure just how much of that fondness is from the memories themselves, like he had tried to think before.

    and just like that it’s over.

    “You sure you’re not tired?”, he asked, in between shared breaths. He could feel the heaviness of Nico’s tired bones, had noticed the way his eyelids had looked heavy earlier when he had just arrived; and he knew how tiring a quest could be, especially such a long one. Nico could sleep, and they could just start again the next morning.

    “I am, a little”, Nico replied, and Percy was about to put him down and let him get some well deserved rest. He stopped when Nico held onto him tighter, got his lips close to Percy’s ear, and murmured, “So, take care of me tonight?”
