I peered at the rest of the room, at the rest of my friends, at the rest of the eyes staring holes into my skin. They all stood there, awkwardly solemnly and tensely. I scanned each of their faces desperately, trying to find something. ANYTHING. Emily and Jess were turned away, arms crossed and contrite as they knowingly looked at each other and away from me. Ashley was silently crying, standing and shivering aside Matt who appeared to be staring off despondently. Mike stood off to the side beside Emily, almost trying to distance himself from the group, never looking in my direction. Two faces were missing from the group.
The emptiness I felt at that moment should have answered all of my questions. Their deathly grim expressions were all I should have needed to put the pieces together, but I somehow needed more. I needed confirmation. I peered up at Sam, expectantly, searingly knowingly yet uncertain at the same time. She answered my stare with two words that crashed my world.
“They’re gone.”

Josh finally turned, not pulling away from her but craning his head back enough to meet her eye. She couldn’t say what the look on his face was – defiance or desperation. She couldn’t decide whether there was a difference. “You know that, right? That they’re dead?”
Sam and Josh have a talk about the twins after the rest of the search party goes to sleep for the night.
