It was a small place with large glass windows through which one could glimpse the cosy interior, bathed in a warm light that contrasted with the grey of the city mornings.
Every day, Arthur walked past the café, drawn by the rich aroma of freshly ground coffee and the familiar sound of the bell above the door announcing new arrivals.

Summary
Unsatisfied with his current life, Merlin takes a sabbatical from work and explores the British coastline to clear his head of life's mundaneness. On his return from Cornwall, he comes across a young blonde girl attempting to hitch-hike along the motorway. Fearing for her safety, Merlin offers her a ride home.
Upon entering the small town of Cam-Lott, Merlin makes a lasting impression on Police Chief Arthur Pendranyl and starts a chain of events that have him seeing the inside of a jail cell more often than not. When he isn't being an errand-boy or stumbling upon strange trinkets in forest caves, Merlin slots into the small town life with ease. Between summer faire's, camping trips and hiking, Merlin almost forgets that no one in the town -except one -has left the towns perimeter.
Why has no one left? Why are his memories feeling hazier by the day? And why, oh why, is there a sword buried in a stone?

He's struggling to deal with the aftermath of coming out to his unaccepting father, the strain in his relationships since leaving his ex, and the slightly deranged neighbor who claims to know him from thousands of years ago. Well, that last part is sort of a new edition, one that he doesn't really mind all that much. It's kind of entertaining.
(OR: Arthur returns but doesn't remember anything about Camelot or the Warlock who has been waiting hundreds of years for him. Merlin takes the appropriate amount of revenge for that.)

Ever since Arthur was crowned king, Merlin was determined to convince Arthur to repeal the ban on magic and bring peace back to Camelot by having an alliance with the druids and their people step foot in Camelot without fear of being hunted and without fear of being hanged, persecuted, burned at the stake or have their heads chopped off for simply existing.
When the druids entered the room, instead of bowing to Arthur, they all bowed to Merlin instead.
