Summary
Kaito stops to think about the question, resting his head against the towels and nudging his back against the ground as he wracks his brain. “I liked the makeovers Kaede and Tsumugi were doing.” The answer escapes him before he knows it’s there.
Rantaro ceases his motions entirely, hucking his wipes in the trashcan and placing his hands on the counter as he glances at him in the reflection of the slightly dirtied mirror. “Yeah?” His voice isn’t quite disbelieving, but it’s a reasonable mixture of curiosity and surprise. “You didn’t strike me to be that interested.”
It’s not a strange reaction, considering he ditched the scenario midway through.
He hadn't meant to freak and leave so quickly—he laughed and smirked along while the others got their nails and their faces painted, but when the striking warmth of the spotlight pointed towards him it brought a pinch to his heart and a seize his lungs and a violent emotion to his stomach he couldn’t tack a name to if he tried.
Kaito and Rantaro talk after a party, and their conversation winds up bending and curving along unfamiliar roads.

It’s times like those that Rantaro really feels like he doesn’t deserve Kaito, who is warm and accommodating and who will curl their arms around Rantaro’s waist and pull him in without even a raised eyebrow, but in the aftermath of his episode—and safely tucked under the covers—Rantaro is feeling a bit more normal about it.
Normal enough to roll over and take Kaito’s face in his hands, being gentle so he won’t wake them, taking in their sleep-softened features as a heady warmth fills his chest. It’s rare that Rantaro actually gets to watch Kaito sleep like this. They wake up so early most days, and while watching Kaito fall asleep is equally pleasant, there’s just something different about getting to catch them in the midst of their rest, expression totally relaxed, their lips parted as they breathe in and out.

One of Rantaro’s hands lays itself on top of Kaito’s. “Kaito? It’s okay if you want to get some piercings, you know? You’d look good with them.” His other hand moves around to brush against Kaito’s ear, and when Kaito glances at his face, they see that his eyes are narrowed, scrutinising. “I think a gold ring would look really good… it’d complement your hair. Of course, you should get what you want, but I’m just saying. If you’d like, I could call the parlour I used to work at. I’m sure they’d be willing to—”
“Actually,” Kaito starts. Rantaro doesn’t seem offended to have been interrupted; on the contrary, he smiles, his eyebrows quirking. Kaito takes a moment to remember how to breathe. “I was wondering if—I know you don’t do it like, for pay anymore, but I was wondering—if you could do it for me? Like—” Oh, this sucks so bad. The warmth creeps down to Kaito’s neck. “Like… pierce my ears.”
“You wanted me to do it?” Rantaro asks, his eyebrows raising further.

“Hey,” Rantaro frowns.
“So I asked her for a fun fact about her partner! And Harukawa-san threatened to kill me, which is business as usual, and then eventually she admitted that she thinks it’s cute that Momota-san can’t tie their shoelaces. Then she threatened to kill me if I ever told anyone. Oh!” Kaede furrows her brow. “She didn’t mean that, did she?”
“Uh,” Rantaro really couldn’t say. Harukawa is pretty scary for a babysitter. “Hope not?”
“Awww, geez!” Kaede huffs, giving Rantaro a pouty look. “I’m sure she was just being hyperbolic!”
