Maya Hart had always been an expert at two things: pretending she didn’t care about anything and protecting Riley Matthews, her best friend and the best person to ever walk the Earth. Because how could she ever compete with Riley? Maya was a mess painted in sarcasm, while Riley was a sunrise made of hope and perfect smiles. So when Lucas Friar walked into their lives, Maya did what she did best: she stepped back.
With cynical jokes, smiles that hurt more than they healed, and a friendship that meant everything to her, Maya would try to convince the world—and herself—that Lucas Friar belonged to Riley. After all, if Maya wasn’t enough for herself, how could she ever be enough for someone like him?

“Then I’ll stop it.” Urgh, the alcohol was leaking into her voice. Maybe the vodka was a mistake. “I’ll stop it. You’ll go to hit someone and I’ll be like wooosh, and like no, bro, you’re losing your temper, and you’ll be all whoa, thanks Maya, and you and Riley will go riding off into the sunset.”
“You’d do that for me?” There was a note of sincerity in Lucas’s voice that sobered Maya right up.
“Yeah, ‘course. I give the best good person lessons. I was taught by the best, you know.”

She'd much rather pretend that everything is okay when it's not. She'd much rather be the best friend who is strong and supportive and well, everything you could ever ask of someone. Maya isn't okay. Not that she'd ever let anybody know that.
Maya won't admit it, but she has ADHD. Maya won't admit it, but she thinks she's depressed. Maya won't admit much, but that's okay because she doesn't need to. Because nobody needs to know how sad her life truly is.

The world is loud. It’s so loud and so bright sometimes and so overwhelming it makes her skin buzz and her head echo. But Maya's normal, she really is. She’s the badass, she swears by it. She’s not different, she doesn’t have problems, Maya's fine.
