Summary
Perhaps he should have gotten it over with the first time she asked. Stood up in front of his wife, his family, his community, his church and Heavenly Father, and said the words that would show the world that he was a good, believing, Mormon, that his faith was strong. They were just words, after all. They only had meaning when people ascribed them meaning. Perhaps if he practised, he could say the words, knowing they were empty, and carry that emptiness as lightly as Bill Taba carried the Piute prayers passed down through generations of his family alongside the rote-learned Catholic prayers of his childhood.
Post-canon. Becca has taken the kids to Arizona. Jeb bakes a cake and tries to feel something.

Jeb does not deserve her, and he knows this. He wants to burn down the temple that told Becca she should settle for a man like him, and he wants to make an altar to her from its ashes even as she leaves him. After all, what is faith if not perseverance in the face of abandonment?
