During the events of Inherit the Earth, Sam and Dean offer themselves up for Chuck’s long-awaited Winchester Bowl. When Dean demands saving Cas as part of the deal, Chuck has a brutal declaration: that Dean's beloved angel was his self-insert all along.
Sam strikes back, denouncing Chuck as a liar and false god. Chuck's response? A Biblical flood. Team Free Will only survives thanks to the help of the archangel Michael, whose true allegiance remains uncertain. As their faith is tested, Team Free Will must hold fast to their belief in family—and especially in Castiel.

Mouth still wet, still parted, she’s still warm and shaking but the lamp light catches her brown eyes and carves out the gold inside, her eyes directed up like desperate men pray to God, but she’s looking at him.
He knows what she’s asking. He knows what she’s hardly asking.
And he knows, very well, that he can say ‘no.’
Her shoulders tense and carve sharp against his chest, over his heart, he wonders for the first time what this body would look like wearing those white costume wings, but when he looks down at her again, somehow her expression is carved even more open, the desperation folded over by some hopelessness, a small loss. She still says it, still calls his name and nothing more, asks nothing else - “Sam.”
