Prelude: the action occurs after chapter 84.2, meaning Yukine is given a new name, and Hiyori has admitted her feelings toward Yato. Bishamon returned to Takamagahara after an incident and, eventually, healed. Heaven did not put charges on a man with a monk due to inability to find him.
Shortly before the upcoming battle with The Sorcerer, Yato witnesses the burial of his beloved without a single explanation of why was she tragically killed. Being in agony, he releases Kazuma and runs away, leaving behind all promises given to Amaterasu herself. Only one single wish left unfulfilled - to see Hiyori one more time and save Yukine. Is it actually impossible to meet the deceased? As for the Father, has he decided to give his son freedom again or is it one of his sly plans, as always?

Long ago, in the time before the age of myths, a god was betrayed by her people and went mad with rage and grief. In order to stop her murderous rampage, a small village willingly offered the god one of their own and enshrined her as their guardian deity deep within the forest. Since then, every fifteen years, the village has faithfully offered a willing sacrifice to keep their god appeased and ensure her protection.
At least, that's what the stories say, but the village carpenter has his doubts about the "willing" part. Seeing as he's the one tied to the stake this year, Yato is pretty sure he knows that better than anyone.
