Hebert’s lectures were never-ending, they could still be heard faintly even as Dan rolled to his side and slammed the pillow as hard as he could into his ears; how was he supposed to want to get up and do anything when his whole life had been taken? He’s basically already dead, without the added benefit of Herbert being gone.
Shockingly enough, dealing with the fallout of death isn't either of the men's strong suit, neither is placing healthy boundaries.

This would be their first year taking Evelyn to meet ‘Santa Claus’. It was a hideous tradition; bringing children to sit on the lap of a strange man and whisper their requests into his ear. Herbert refused on principle to bring their daughter to visit a mall Santa, but Dan had brought home a leaflet for a Christmas Grotto at Arkham Public Library.
“It’ll be at a library, Herbert. We could check out some books for her whilst we’re there! How bad could it be?”

This would be an inconceivable notion to her thirteen year old self, even her sixteen year old self, but at twenty five, she'd really choose living under the bridge first. Ok. Maybe not that."
Meg Halsey is perfect: Beautiful, accomplished, a bright future doctor. She escaped her hometown and moved to New York, where she likely would have stayed forever. After her mother dies, though, she is forced to move back to Arkham and face everything she wanted to leave behind.

A.K.A I made a tumblr post about how Crampton/Combs are romantically involved in all of their collabs, got replies and decided to write down a suggestion of "what if Meg was the protagonist, not Dan?" Also I did the cop-out summary thing and pasted the first paragraph of the fic (I'm sorry).Christmas edit: Changed the name of the fic, because it's finished now, and if I wanna write sequels, I have no idea what to name them. This was a well-practised routine, acted out every year as Herbert pretended to be entirely uninterested in whatever performance that Dan had selected for the two of them.
He would sit in an angry silence, arms crossed and glaring at the crowds of people shuffling into their seats. Then the lights would dim and the curtains would open, and Herbert would drop the act.
Even in the darkened hall, Dan would see how his eyes would shine with excitement, his hand swaying in time to the music.

Dan is ill, and Hebert decides he'll cook Christmas dinner for the both of them.

How hard could Christmas dinner be? Herbert was a scientist; and moreover, a man whose skills in chemistry had ousted God as the ultimate arbiter of life and death.
Cooking was a type of chemistry, applying heat at the correct temperature and for the correct length of time would produce the correct chemical reaction. A recipe was nothing more than a method to be followed to produce the desired result.
There was some complexity in the timings, but Herbert could merely make a note of the times on a piece of paper. He would just have to remain organized.

Dan had all sorts of warm clothes; thick thermal under-shirts, cardigans, hoodies, and horrendously ugly sweaters in every color. Herbert considered the choices laid before him with clinical scrutiny.
The winter season had always affected Dan; his sentimentality and superficial need for ‘normalcy’ latching onto the familiar traditions of Christmastime. Recently, one of the couples from down the road had invited them to a Christmas potluck, and Dan had not-so-subtly suggested that Herbert should try wearing a Christmas sweater.
The offending item was currently stuffed at the back of their shared wardrobe, the sewn on pom-poms and bright candy-cane pattern hidden from view.

“It’s a Christmas tree,” Dan said, as though that was all the explanation that was needed. “Do you wanna help decorate it?”
“I was under the impression that these things are usually displayed upstairs, in the living room.”
Dan merely shrugged. Perhaps he had acquired some sort of Christmas-related mania.
