Rei wasn’t fit for the life Miri and Kazuki needed. He wasn’t gentle or very kind for that matter. He tried his hardest but always seemed to mess something up. And because of that, he’d recoiled away from the gentle life that they had been growing. When they needed help he would be there to offer it, but he never sought out or gave care the way Kazuki and Miri did. Kazuki was all hair ruffling and hopeful words, and Miri was big hugs and hair braiding. And Rei was…nothing like them.
Suwa Rei was a weapon. Nothing more. Everything less.
But he was trying.

He turned his eyes to something else, the packets of chocolate chip cookies. Miri loved these ones. It reminded him of the way she would pick out the chocolate chips and feed them to Rei.
Kazuki shook his head again, every single thought that occured in his mind made him think of that depressed looking fool his heart was so fond of, which annoyed him to the point of exhaustion and he wanted to sink to the dust covered floor of that dairy aisle.

Summary
Intimacy, in all its forms, was something that was completely foreign to Rei. It was drilled into him from day one that he was nothing but a weapon, a tool for the organization to use as they saw fit. The only touch he knew for the vast majority of his life was accompanied by pain, whether it was from his father hitting him across the face or a target being stubborn and grabbing onto him. They all stung, burned or bruised, and the very few that weren’t painful were harsh and cold at best.
That is, until he met Kazuki. Even from the first day they met, there was something different about him. There was a safety and kindness in his touch that Rei had never experienced before. He felt it when he was half conscious and starving in Kazuki’s arms right after Kazuki had tracked him down on that first mission. He felt it when Kazuki cut his hair the first time, taking the time to comb out every tangle without pulling too hard. He felt it every time they brushed shoulders walking, every time Kazuki threw an arm around Rei to drag him somewhere, every time they hugged or kissed or fell asleep in each other's arms.

In his place grew a bitter teen, one who had no choice but to hold the gun handed to him with shaking hands and shoot the family dog, watching the life bleed out of her eyes with tears blurring his vision. And some part of him, a sick part of him, one he tried to stamp out while it remained mere sparks and hadn’t yet grown into a wildfire, reveled in it.
