“You never answered the question,” Bianca says as she swallows down the last of the orange slice and licks the juice off her lips. “Who’s your dream guy?”
“Oh. Is that what we were talking about?”
Bianca nibbles at the very top corner of the last slice. This one she eats differently. Tugs a hole in the skin and then sucks out all the juices like it’s an Otter Pop. Vic watches in rapt awe as she empties the piece of fruit and then swallows it whole.
At thirteen, Vic and Bianca are the very best of friends. By twenty-three, they’re barely on speaking terms. Vic thinks this is monstrously unfair: she might be marrying Bianca’s father, but that shouldn’t mean anything needs to change between the two of them.
