Neil Josten dies in West Virginia, where he is stuffed into a car by the Malcolm siblings, never to be seen again. For Andrew Minyard, gone is a world full of colour and blue eyes, auburn curls and citrus shampoo, white 10s on ugly orange uniform, deep scars and healed wounds hid under just-as-ugly palmetto hoodies, and a gorgeous face that made it all beautiful. Left is an empty heart and a ratty duffel bag that Andrew keeps with him at night, clinging onto something tat made it all feel real. Like it was more than a pipe dream. A figure of his drugged dreams turned into sober imagination.

For Nathaniel Wesninski, gone is blonde hair, hazel eyes, eyebrow piercings, cigarette smoke on his tongue, coconut shampoo and an immovable goalie pulling him down to earth. He is held down and delirious - all he sees is Lola Malcolm’s smiling face before he wakes up in a cold, cold basement with corpses at his feet and a bloody cleaver in his hands. Nathaniel is gone and here and gone again, shuddering into aching withdrawal that made him angry enough to rip something apart.

Neil’s words held the sort of weight that hung around their shoulders, that made the air too thick to make room and welcome any new ones. It was just them and their breaths, just the wind bumping branches, tumbling through leaves, and the gravel crunching when Andrew shifted.
“Why now?”
Neil just looked at him, a gaze that was unhidden, the ugly truth that he guarded within the splintered part of his ribs a physical thing in his eyes.
He couldn’t hold out any longer, there was nothing left.

He wasn't anyone, not really; not anymore. He hadn't really been anyone in years now. There'd been a time. Once. But there were entire lifetimes between who he could have been and what he'd become. He could taste it sometimes; blackberries and sand stinging his tongue like the iron branded on his shoulder.
It was easier to pretend he'd never been anyone at all.
"I'm nothing," he answered. The ghost of a smile pulled at his lips; sharp and cruel. "A wraith." The Wraith, he didn't say, but the shadows ran through Andrew's eyes and he wondered if Andrew had heard it anyways.
