In the aftermath of Culloden, Catrìona and Jamie do their best to recover, each thinking the other lost, until they are reunited once more. But both are wanted for their actions at Culloden, so Catrìona's grandfather, Eairdsidh Ruadh Fowlis, Laird of Cìosamul, agrees to take them both under his wing. For a time, things are almost normal, until a figment of Catrìona's past begins to call out to her, and it involves a mythical island known as Hy-Brasil, and a further exploration into her mysterious ancestry that leads her to ask one specific question: Who exactly was her maternal grandmother?
