He stood abruptly, his hand already on the doorknob when Dr. Wingrade spoke again, her tone gentle but firm. “What makes you think you’re bothering me?”
Sam hesitated, staring at the door. His fingers twitched, ready to turn the knob, ready to bolt.

“My dad,” Sam whispered as if John might be just outside the door, waiting to drag him back.
