    Summary

It's February 1960, and the Civil Rights movement has exploded into National consciousness, with rousing sit-in protests in several cities in the South. Chiefly, Greensboro in North Carolina, and Nashville in Tennessee.

For Andy and Nick, the question of ending racial segregation is a no-brainer - they are vigorous supporters of the fight against racial discrimination, just as they are in the struggle for queer rights. Nick travels first to Greensboro, and then to Nashville, to cover the protests on the ground. Andy is immensely proud of what Nick is doing, and he does his part too - running impassioned daily editorials in the Chronicle, highlighting the cause of freedom and the vital importance of ending oppression for all citizens - whatever the colour of their skin.

After weeks spent apart out of necessity, bearing witness to the stirring events unfolding around them; Nick and Andy are finally reunited at the end of February. Their first Valentine’s Day together as a couple is therefore celebrated 2 weeks late. But for all that, it is tenderly romantic, and affirmative of all the devotion and passion they feel for each other.

For Nick & Andy, every single day they spend together is Valentine’s Day.

    Summary

It is December 1970, a couple of weeks before Christmas. Nick and Andy are having a contented evening together in their apartment, with Nick reflecting on their journey together thus far. He thinks about their activism in pushing for queer rights; especially against the backdrop of the Stonewall Inn riots of '69, and the first NYC Pride March of earlier this year.

And then their phone rings - and there's someone on the line with some very welcome and very joyous news for them. Something that brings a little more happiness into Nick and Andy's lives, and sharpens their sense of purpose and legacy.

    Summary

It is December 1980, and in a landmark judgement in The People v. Ronald Onofre, the New York Court of Appeals strikes down the prevailing anti-queer laws as unconstitutional. Effectively, this means the Court has decriminalized consensual homosexual activity.

For Nick and Andy, it is an occasion of immense joy and relief, pride and hope. For 21 years, they have been assiduously pushing for queer rights, and fighting to create space for themselves where their immense, profound love for each other can flourish; despite the bigoted, narrow minded attitudes of that era.

And now their efforts, and those of others who have stood shoulder to shoulder with them, have finally borne fruit.

Nick and Andy join the special New York Pride March, reflecting on their journey together; and on the potent, compelling bond that they share. Their love that has grown from strength to strength, and that has enabled them to face down any challenge thrown at them.

    Summary

Andy remembers his English lit classes in junior high, where he'd been puzzled by a line of dialogue from George Eliot's 'The Mill On The Floss'. The pithy observation went, 'What novelty is worth that sweet monotony, where everything is known and loved because it is known?'

It was only after he fell completely in love with Nick, and they started living together, did Andy truly understand what this sentiment meant. When Nick and he became the sublime seduction of each other's mundane existence, and the sweet stability of their fantasies. They were each other’s ‘meant to be’s’ without the heavy baggage of being.

When Andy found himself blissfully happy with the most 'regular' of evenings, spent in Nick's comfortably enjoyable company. Even if there wasn't any real reason for a particular evening to feel special—it was just another pleasant but non-momentous one after all; hardly distinguishable from hundreds of others—Andy still found himself wanting to wrap it up in shiny tinsel, and to cherish it forever.

Or, a post canon take on Three Decembers in Nick and Andy's lives.

This first fic in the series is set in December 1959.
