“Jon…” Martin said, a clear uneasiness in his voice. He walked over to him, putting the cup of tea down on the desk. He moved quickly, Jon feeling nervous as Martin approached closer. Please, Jon thought, just leave me. I don’t want to hurt you.
“Jon, you look so…” as Martin trailed off, Jon could think of a thousand words to fill the blank. Old, tired, ugly, skinny…
“Weak,” Martin said, his voice soft. Jon felt his heart start to beat faster, two sides of a coin flipping quickly back and forth. On one side, Jon wanted so desperately for Martin to care, to notice his weakness— it was human nature to want to be noticed, a remainder from who Jon used to be. On the other side, the sooner he noticed, the sooner he’d try to stop what Jon knew he must do.

Tian begins to stir next to him. His eyes blink open and Phupha gets lost in them immediately, dark like chocolate and deep like the night sky, sparkling like the 1000 stars on Pha Pun Dao cliff when his pretty lips stretch into a slow smile. “Hey” he croaks out, voice still rough from sleep and the exhaustion of the past days. Phupha’s heart constricts, and he has to close his eyes, touching his forehead to Tian's and letting out a shaky breath. This boy. So young and reckless yet so wonderfully brave and headstrong, gentle, and soft but still rough around the edges. And Phupha almost lost him to his carelessness regarding his own life.
Tian's gentle fingers find their way into his hair, holding onto him, letting out a sigh as his other hand comes to rest on his neck. Phupha opens his eyes and looks at him, his wonderful, wonderful boy and there is that expression again. The one he'd worn so often over the last few weeks. A question, a challenge, but also knowing and patient. -

Denki looks over at Hitoshi, a warm feeling in his stomach. The artificial lighting inside the store is nothing special, but Hitoshi is standing next to the window and the rays of the setting sun highlight him in a way that lightens the bruises under his eyes and makes him look lighter. More carefree, less burdened by the heaviness of the world. He smiles when he makes eye contact with Denki, and the warm feeling grows until Denki feels almost bursting with it. They started this store on a whim, and it’s more of a hobby right now since they’re still in the peak of their hero careers, but Denki can see himself continuing to run this shop with Hitoshi even after they retire from being Pro Heroes, and when they grow old together.
