Summary
Astala Tabris stares at the wall of rust-colored clouds that slowly but inexorably grow closer to the camp, like a wave ready to break and drag them all into darkness. They come from the northeast, from their destination: from Denerim. A more optimistic soul might have chalked their coloration up to the setting sun; Astala knows that it’s most likely due to smoke and ash. Her home city is burning. Tomorrow, they’ll be marching right into the inferno.
Oh bugger. She won’t sleep well tonight; she can already feel it. The feeling is not entirely alien. A little less than a year ago, she had been in the same spot. Emotionally at least. Physically, she had been waiting tables and then running home in the dark to fall into bed and try not to think about her impending wedding. This chapter tells of the beginning of the adventures of Astala Tabris, Hero of Ferelden; of her wedding, abduction and recruitment into the Grey Wardens.

Summary
Astala looks away from the dark pulmes of smoke rising over the darkspawn-beset city of Denerim and towards the camp of Ferelden's armies. She catches a glimpse of Ilanlas—a feat in and of itself since he is still two heads shorter than her and thus barely taller than the dwarves of Orzammar—and waves. Ilanlas acknowledges her with a nod and walks over.
“How are you doing?” she asks, both genuinely interested and trying to distract herself.
Ilanlas shrugs. “I’m right where I should be. That is enough.”
“Eager to kill some more darkspawn?” she asks.
“Always,” Ilanlas answers. His quiver, Astala notices, is hanging at his side and filled with all the arrows it can fit.
“What was it hahren Paivel said…” She thinks for a moment, then turns to Ilanlas. “Keeper Marethari told you the same, an elvhen phrase. Do you remember?”
Ilanlas raises his eyebrows. “I think I do. Halam’shivanas, right?”
“Halam’shivanas,” Astala repeats. “The sweet sacrifice of duty.”This chapter tells of the first few days on the road of Astala Tabris, Hero of Ferelden: of her meeting with clan Sabrae, her first encounter with darkspawn, and the recruitment of Ilanlas Mahariel

Summary
“We’ve come a long way since those first days,” Ilanlas says.
Astala laughs. “Spoken like you've lived it, huh? Remember Harman, when you cut your foot up? Remember the barn you wanted to burn down and the tavern maid who had a crush on you?”
“I remember when you bit me,” Ilanlas shoots back.
Astala grimaces and holds her hands up in defeat. “Shutting up now.”
She goes to reach for the ring around her neck, then remembers where it is now and smiles.
“We passed all of those towns again in these last days,” Ilanlas says. “It could have gone very differently for them, had more heeded our warning.”This chapter tells of the journey of Astala Tabris and Ilanlas Mahariel to Ostagar; of their meeting their future companions Alistair and Morrigan; and of their Joining.

Summary
“I’m not looking forward to the battle,” Astala says quietly.
"Nobody is," Ilanlas says.
Astala looks away. Her gambeson has recently been washed—which is still weird, not to do that herself. Even after going through a professional, it still smells faintly of fear.
Khêd and Sulri are somewhere out there, getting the dwarves situated. Maybe explain what clouds are. She'll have to go and look for them at some point. They should have one more drink together before the battle. Who knows where they might be afterwards. This chapter tells of the curing of the mabari Rascal; the preparations for the battle of Ostagar; and the battle itself, and our heroes’ miraculous escape from the Tower of Ishal.

Summary
Well. There’s no use standing around. Astala starts making her way through the crowd, looking for Alistair, or Morrigan. Maybe she’d even find them both if they had gotten to argue again. She turns around, looking here and there, finds neither them, nor Sten, nor Leliana, nor-
Loud barking is the first thing she hears, and then Rascal comes barreling down the dirt path between two rows of tent. Astala is happy to see him. How strange, she thinks, that she should be happy to see a mabari. This story tells of the arrival of the Wardens in Lothering; of their first days working together as a group; of the recruitment of Sten of the Beresaad and sister Leliana; and of the naming of the mabari Rascal.
