Description:

St. Agatha, the Catholic patron saint of rape victims, was raped and tortured on the rack as a virgin martyr as punishment for rejecting the sexual advances of a Roman prefect.

Inanna, the Mesopotamian goddess, descended into the underworld at the behest of her recently widowed sister Ereshkibal. As she descended through each of seven gates, Ereshkibal commanded that all Inanna's armor, jewelry, and clothing be stripped item by item, which robbed her of her divine powers. At the last, she was flayed of even her skin and corpse, so that only her ghost remained.
