Summary
Astarion closes his eyes and tries to sigh out quietly enough that Col won’t hear. Given how perceptive they are, he doubts it’s successful. “What do you want? I thought you were going on a little duergar murder spree.”
“I wouldn’t do that without you.” There’s something like humor in their voice. “I know how much you like murder.”
Despite his frustration, Astarion can’t help being at least a little pleased. He does like murder.

Summary
“You’re drifting, my sweet.” Astarion’s voice pulls them back to the present moment. “Let’s find Jaheira and see if she can’t sober you up.”
But no, that’s not what they want. They came over here because they want him. Not for sex or even for the comfort of touch without violence. Just to be near him. To be near the one person who understands even the first part of what it means to be this sort of spawn.

Summary
No, if he’d tried to plan for this, he would’ve wound up running. That’s his problem. He never thinks through the reality of a situation, can’t see the details until they’re slapping him in the face with oh shit I care about them or oh fuck we can’t just casually take control of an Elder Brain or oh gods here we are, with Cazador on his knees in front of me.
Cazador on his knees. On his knees. Scrambling for one last chance to take and drain and ruin Astarion’s entire fucking life which will never happen again, not if he—
Not if he kills Cazador, obviously. And he will. Cazador will die today. It’s just a matter of how. He has the dagger in his hand, ready to strike. To stab or to carve. To end things or to ascend.Which is, of course, when it all finally sinks in.

Summary
“You aren’t safe with me.” They say it like it’s a fact, like it’s another of their blunt truths instead of the most ridiculous thing he’s ever heard. “I’m not—there is risk with me. You needn’t be saddled with that.”
“I brought you here to have sex on my grave.”
He blurts it out with all the grace of Karlach in an antiques shop. It’s so off script, so completely not what he thought he’d be saying when he laid all this out in his head, but if he’s going to be walking through the unknown with anyone, of course it would be Col.

Summary
Astarion shifts and holds their face between his palms, tender like a bruise. “Oh, my love. It can always get worse."
They know. He knows that they know. It is a fundamental truth writ in both of their skeletons, woven through tendons and muscle fibres and blood, blood, blood. This is an old bit of honesty between them, something to address and laugh at—obviously it can always get worse. That’s the punchline. It’s the world’s oldest joke.
And yet, he finds himself deviating from the script tonight. “But it needn’t actually do so. Not when we’re together.”
Col chokes out a disbelieving laugh. “Are you trying to—to take care of me?”
“And if I am?” He asks, intending for archness and landing inexorably nearer to fond.
They smile, soften. “Then I would let you.”

Summary
He laughs, light and bright, and Col aches at how beautiful he is. He is the most beautiful creature in the world right now—not because of his hair or his eyes or his smile; not because of the clothes he spent hours repairing.
He is radiant in his raw hope, sharpened and splintered and still very much a raw wound.

Summary
"Astarion. I am going to do something you will not like. I hope you will forgive me for it.”
“I think I could forgive you most anything, my love.” He admits, voice thick with warmth spooned over concern. “But if you’re so concerned about that, we could always discuss it. We are in this together, after all.”
They are. He speaks true. But Col knows he will never agree. Still, perhaps they do owe him honesty, if nothing else.
“I am going to ask Withers to bring Orin back.”

Summary
"Am I a sacrificial lamb, to be slaughtered in vain as it tries to earn Father’s love?”
“You already tried that one with me,” Col says. “I think we can safely say it doesn’t work.”
It’s easy not to rise to her bait. She’s lashing out, trying to use her words as blades since they’ve left her bereft of everything she held dear. It’s cruel, what they’re doing. The others accused Col of selfishness, but in truth, none of them know the half of it.
This is the true selfishness. Not putting the inn at risk. Not requiring an extra person on watch. Not even tying Astarion’s future to a madwoman. The real selfishness is forcing a corpse back to life, just so Col can watch her try to bleed.

Summary
“Of course you’d be here.” He sighs and runs a hand through his hair, exasperated and—nervous. It’s like Col can smell the anxiety in his blood. It is almost delicious. Almost. “I should’ve expected it, really. Is this all your doing? Have you done yet another impossible thing to me?”
Shadowheart crosses her arms and gives Col a sideways, suspicious sort of look. “What unusual odds, that you would know another survivor of the wreckage.”
She’s right. It’s beyond belief, or would be, if Col had any sense of what to believe in.

Summary
More words come from the edges of their mind, stolen from books Sceleritas has never liked them studying. Quiet, barely there, not noticeable at all except for how the syllables build walls inside of their chest, as if to hide something precious.
Colduul'sso. Not free.
Colmaglust. Not alone.
Savalir. Murderer.
But—Colsavalir tel’salen’nys. Not the murderer of my sister.
Col. This is who they must be, if they are to keep the blades from her throat. If they wish to step from His path and choose her life, the nameless child of Bhaal must keep these words hidden from even their conscious thoughts.
