This is an enthralling b&w 1968 anime that combines ink wash painting, hard-edged cartoons, and, occasionally, film segments in its imagery. The transitions and compositions achieve maximum impact with minimal means, using gray scale to effect a full color palette. The series is visually brilliant, and is framed by beautiful theme music.
I love Edo Period drama. For the commoner, life then was unimaginably hard. Makes me grateful for democracy.
Unfortunately, only 18 of the 52 eps have been subbed. I hope that TSHS - HnG will resume working on this. It is a treasure, and kicks the ass of most of the anime I have seen over the past 13 years.
If you love drawing, design, or Japanese history, you will love this. It reminds me of the epic manga, Lone Wolf and Cub. I recommended the series 'for fans' because many people demand color and fluid animation. Frankly, I have even more respect for the virtuosic use of the full power of black-and-white. This is one to really savor.
