Amazon's Echo Dot drops to only 23 for Black Friday
Yes, Black Friday is basically here and, though we're not sure where this year went, all the sales are softening the blow. Amazon, sure to be the home of a lot of shopping this year, has already marked down some of its most wanted products. Included in the sales is our choice for best smart speaker under 50, the fifth generation Amazon Echo Dot. Right now, you can pick up the speaker for just 23 -- an all-time low price. The fifth-gen Amazon Echo Dot came out in 2022 and has great features, including exceptionally loud and clear audio for its sticker price (let alone the discounted one).
Did you play Pokรฉmon Go? You didn't know it, but you were training AI to map the world
You probably didn't know it, but if you played or are still playing Pokรฉmon Go (there are more than half a million active players), you were helping train an AI-powered geospatial model that aims to map the world. A blog post from Niantic, the software developer behind the popular game, explains how it's working on "a large geospatial model to achieve spatial intelligence" and trying to build a "visual positioning system" to understand the world around us -- and it's using data from Pokรฉmon Go. Also: AI transformation is the new digital transformation. To clarify, Niantic is saying that just like data on the web trains AI models, the AI model it's building needs to understand 3D spaces. An immense amount of data and photographs of 3D spaces are available thanks to Pokรฉmon Go players creeping around the world.
Around a quarter of Japan married couples in their 20s met through dating apps
Dating apps are becoming one of the most popular ways for people in Japan to meet their spouses, at least for those in their 20s, recent surveys show. A survey released by an organization promoting "Good Couples Day" -- a celebration held on Nov. 22 each year since the date can be read phonetically as ii fลซfu in Japanese, which directly translates to "good couple" -- showed that 24% of couples in their 20s had met their marriage partner through a dating app. For the youngest group of participants in the survey, which collected data from 1,000 married individuals over the age of 20 across the country in September this year, it was the most popular way to meet a partner, along with meeting through work, which was selected by the same percentage.
Analysis of Fukushima debris sample could take a year, operator says
It will take six months to a year to analyze a tiny sample of radioactive debris retrieved by a robot from Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings' crippled Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant, its operator said Thursday. The analysis could shed light on radioactivity levels and the chemical structure of the fuel debris -- a key part of preparation for the decadeslong decommissioning process. Around 880 tons of hazardous material remain at the Fukushima plant, more than 13 years after a tsunami caused by an earthquake triggered one of the world's worst nuclear incidents. Last week, the sample, weighing just below 0.7 gram -- equivalent to about one raisin -- was delivered to a research lab near Tokyo for analysis. It had been removed from a reactor by an extendible robotic device in a tricky operation suspended several times by technical problems.
Google must sell Chrome to end search monopoly, justice department argues in court filing
Alphabet's Google must sell its Chrome browser, share data and search results with competitors and take a range of other measures to end its monopoly on searching the internet, US prosecutors have argued to a judge. Such changes would essentially result in Google being highly regulated for 10 years, subjecting it to oversight by the same Washington federal court that ruled the company maintained an illegal monopoly in online search and related advertising. "Google's unlawful behaviour has deprived rivals not only of critical distribution channels but also distribution partners who could otherwise enable entry into these markets by competitors in new and innovative ways," the US Department of Justice (DoJ) said in a court filing. The court papers filed on Wednesday night expand on an earlier outline on how the US wants to end Google's monopoly. Google called the proposals radical at the time, saying they would harm US consumers and businesses and shake American competitiveness in artificial intelligence.

Nvidia Says Its Blackwell Chip Is Fine, Nothing to See Here
Chip giant Nvidia reported its third-quarter earnings earlier today, and all ears--and presumably some watch parties--were tuned in to try to determine what the company's performance might mean for the near future of the artificial intelligence industry as a whole. The fate of the company's newest AI chip, Blackwell, was a major focus after production issues caused shipments to be delayed for several months earlier this year. On Sunday, The Information also reported that Blackwell chips were overheating when connected together in Nvidia's customized server racks, prompting the company to make design changes. But Nvidia cofounder and CEO Jensen Huang told analysts and investors on its earnings call today that now Blackwell production "is in full steam." "We will deliver this quarter more Blackwells than we had previously estimated," Huang said.
AI can now create a replica of your personality
Led by Joon Sung Park, a Stanford PhD student in computer science, the team recruited 1,000 people who varied by age, gender, race, region, education, and political ideology. They were paid up to 100 for their participation. From interviews with them, the team created agent replicas of those individuals. As a test of how well the agents mimicked their human counterparts, participants did a series of personality tests, social surveys, and logic games, twice each, two weeks apart; then the agents completed the same exercises. The results were 85% similar.
Nvidia earnings: AI chip leader shows no signs of stopping mammoth growth
The AI chipmaker Nvidia, the world's most valuable company and the engine of the artificial-intelligence boom, rolled out another set of quarterly results on Wednesday to investors' delight. The company, whose value has soared by 2.2tn this year to 3.6tn on the back of near-doubling of chip sales, said it had revenue of 35.08bn, against expectations of 33.15bn. Its profits more than doubled year-over-year. Revenue surged 94% from the same quarter last year. The company projected that revenue would increase by 70% in the coming quarter.
