Storm Éowyn caused a number of trees to fall at Edinburgh Botanic Garden including this Pyrus balansae (pear). This species is native to Turkey; specifically, the eastern regions of the country, in the areas around the Taurus Mountains. This botanical garden has to decide how to deal with the fallen timber and the new spaces which have been created.

A cascade of beautiful evergreen leaves is formed by this Heptapleurum taiwanianum (Taiwanese schefflera). This striking plants can form a single-stemmed, small tree, or a multi-stemmed shrub. Young plants need to be kept frost-free, but will survive outdoors once over 1m or so, if sheltered from cold, drying winds with a well-drained soil in sun or semi-shade.

There was an impressive spread of Galanthus 'Magnet' (snowdrop) in Edinburgh Botanic Garden, Scotland. This bulbous perennial has the distinctive characteristic of a long thin pedicel which results in the flowers moving in the slightest breeze.

Outside a greengrocers shop in Deal, Kent, were these colourful pots of Anemone coronaria (garden anemone, poppy windflower, St Brigid's anemone). There was a great range of bright shallowly cup-shaped flowers in red, violet-blue and white which were all attracting the local bees.

Yesterday I saw the largest specimen of Edgeworthia chrysantha (paperbush, mitsumata) I had ever seen. Today I went back to take these photographs and the scent of the flowers was on the breeze flowing down the road before I reached this front garden. This deciduous shrub has very flexible shoots and is native to China and the Himalayas, being named after its traditional use in paper making. It thrives in a sheltered position in full sun or light dappled shade in well-drained, humus-rich loamy soil.

Originally found in a church yard in Oxfordshire by Alan Street, Galanthus nivalis f. pleniflorus 'Blewbury Tart' (snowdrop) has a very distinctive appearance. The double flowers face upwards producing a display of dark green rosettes surrounded by narrow outer segments.

Another herbaceous perennial that provides great winter seed-heads is Echinops ritro (small globe thistle, blue hedgehog, globe flower, steel globe thistle) but now it is ready to be cutback before the new spring growth. This vigorous, upright plant has prickly dark green leaves which are whitish beneath and rounded, violet-blue flower heads from midsummer.

A great characteristic of Calamagrostis × acutiflora 'Karl Foerster' (feather reed grass) is that this ornamental grass continues to stand upright through the winter and catch the light. It is about time to cut back the old stems of this clump-forming deciduous perennial before the new foliage appears.

The clump-forming, semi-evergreen perennial Helleborus niger 'Christmas Carol' (Christmas rose, hellebore) put on an early display of flowers from February in Union Terrace Gardens, an Aberdeen park. The simple bowl-shaped white flowers turn apple green as they age. The plants contrasted well with the foliage of Epimedium cvs. and the larger Helleborus argutifolius (holly-leaved hellebore, Corsican hellebore).

At Edinburgh Botanic Garden, Scotland, there was a fabulous display of snowdrop cultivars including a ‘river’ of Galanthus 'Lady Beatrix Stanley' (snowdrop). This bulbous perennial has well-shaped double flowers and increases reliably to create a striking spring feature.

On this cool glasshouse bench some of last season apples (Malus cvs) were being stored, and the air was full of fragrance from the ripe fruit. The usually recommendation for this storage environment is that it needs to be cool and even temperature of 4-7°C (39-46°F) which is frost free. The storage needs to be well-ventilated, free from rodents and dark. Though this wasn’t a dark place it seemed a good use of the bench till it was needed in the spring.

In this cool glasshouse clumps of the biennial herb Petroselinum crispum (parsley, devil-and-back-ten-times, herb of death, herb Venus, ache) were thriving. These plants will flower next summer but for now they provide a great culinary resource.

This was a great example of a mature Pinus mugo (mountain pine, dwarf pine, Swiss mountain pine) which is an excellent evergreen to provide structure in a garden. This large, spreading shrub or small tree has short, dark green needles in pairs. The species is native to the mountain ranges of Europe, including the Pyrenees, Alps, Carpathians and Appenines.

At Edinburgh Botanic Garden, Scotland, a group of Eranthis hyemalis (winter aconite, winter wolf's bane) were flowering in late winter. This small perennial has a cup-shaped yellow flower, surrounded by divided leafy bracts. The basal leaves are divided into several lobes. This plant is ideal for planting under deciduous trees and shrubs.

Not to be confused with Galanthus species (snowdrops) Leucojum vernum (spring snowflake, Agnes flower, spring-flowered snowflake) flowers in late winter. This bulbous perennial reaches 30cm in height, with glossy dark green leaves and erect stems with 1 or 2 bell-shaped, green-tipped white flowers. The plants thrive in 2.5cm in moderately fertile, humus-rich, reliably moist soil in full sun.
