30s. Queer. She/They. I don't know what I'm doing.

astronomy club sent up a weather balloon w a gopro in it last friday. put in three packs of fruit snacks so they could have a giggle over eating fruit snacks that had been to space.

balloon went up into inner space, about 90,000 feet. came down right near the dinosaur park. a few physics teachers drive out to get it, crack it open on the way home to start watching the footage.

fruit snacks are missing.

multiple sources confirm that fruit snacks were put in balloon and sealed in with duct tape. physics teachers check entire balloon. no fruit snacks.

physics teachers watch footage. all 7 hours of it. right in the middle of footage, there are about 8 minutes of visual and audio static when balloon is in orbit. no other interference with balloon recorded.

conclusions: ???????

aliens stole yo fruit snacks

I’ve been a UFO enthusiast for 2/3rds of my life and this is the most convincing alien encounters story I have ever heard.

Bro why did you censor the snake's cloaca on the snake anatomy post??? It's a snake?

I didn't censor anything, what -

oh. Oh, no. That's meant to be a line to show where the tail begins. Oh no, now I look like some weird prude.

Yeah, that's meant to help people grasp the anatomy and visualize how small the tail is in relation to the torso. Not meant to be some kind of weird snake privacy screen

Gotta respect their snivacy (snake privacy)

im so serious about this but if youre autistic and especially if youre chronically ill creative labour cannot be your only way to relax. working on a creative project is still working. take time to do nothing. its good for you i promise.

How does one do nothing? This is a genuine question. Very chronically ill autistic who wants to create all the time.

I don't know what OP would suggest but here are some restful activities that I've been trying to force myself to do more of:

  • watch (or preferably rewatch) movies and tv shows that aren't emotionally challenging
  • read longform books/stories or nonfiction
  • play chill or simple video games
  • listen to music without doing anything else. Like put on a full album and just lay there and listen to it
  • meditate
  • take walks
  • take naps

I could definitely give a lot of that a try! Thank you!

I'm so glad. It's definitely a process for me, too. The brain's pressure to "create, create, create" and the way it equates 'chilling out' with 'losing' or 'wasting' time.

But I just have to keep reminding myself that resting is NOT a waste, it's nourishment and enrichment. I can't grow my creative crops if I don't nurture them with idleness.

👏 REST 👏 IS 👏 WORK 👏

Rest is necessary to sustain any kind of other activity and to maintain your quality of life.

Rest can also be really, really hard.

We live in a society where nonstop go go go is both expected and encouraged, and that can leave us feeling like 1) any time we spend not doing something "productive" is time wasted (don't get me started on the time is money bullshit) and, 2) without any skills or scaffolding when we do come to the realization that we need to rest.

One of the most important things for rest is knowing yourself and what type of rest you need in any given situation. Is it the cognitive rest of meditation or slight stimulation like (re)watching a show/listening to music? Is it the physical rest of sitting down and rubbing your feet or getting up and moving your body? The social rest of hanging out with good company, or saying no to one too many events?

The only really good way to gain this skill set is to practice. This means paying attention to yourself and your needs even— especially— when it is uncomfortable. Taking five minutes to sit in your body or with your mind to really figure out what you are feeling and the associated needs.

Rest also requires the setting of boundaries with yourself, your expectations, and with others. Put on your own oxygen mask before helping others. Give yourself grace for the simple, incredibly human need to breathe. Remind yourself that by resting now you are extending love and care to your future self.

This is the best one

(in case anyone needs context, since i know there's a bunch of younguns who didn't even know the "It's gonna be May" meme... The song playing is NSync's song "It's Gonna Be Me", the guy in the mint green t-shirt is NSync member Lance Bass, and the guy in the pink hoodie is his husband Michael.)
