Rules of Blackjack

The game of blackjack is played with a standard card deck and each one of the cards has a point value to it. The number cards which go from 2 to 9 are worth the number of points their card number is, such as a 9 will be worth 9 points and a 6 will be worth 6 points. The King, Queen, and Jack cards are each valued at 10 points and the Ace can be used as 1 point or as 11 points. With the game of blackjack, the object is for the player to draw cards that come nearer to the number 21 than the dealer, without going over 21. This is why the game of blackjack is also referred to as “21”.

Blackjack is generally played at a table with an arc shape to it. There are usually places for seven players to be on the outer part of the arc and the dealer is located on the smallest, inside part of the arc. There is a rectangular placard at a corner of the blackjack table which states the minimum and maximum bets for that particular table, as well as provides information such as the rules. Real money online blackjack is played via the computer and players can learn of the instructions and rules by choosing to read this information on the online casino. There are live blackjack games online in which the players will be playing with an actual dealer through the use of webcam, mic, and speakers.

How to Play Blackjack

The game of blackjack itself is a very simple one to learn with regards to the basic rules of the game. Basically, get closer to 21 than the dealer and don’t go over (bust). Most of the blackjack games today are played with four, six, or eight decks. The game starts when the player places a bet. Once the bets have been placed, then each player and the dealer will receive two cards with one of the dealers being dealt facing up so players can see what it is. When playing online, the play is pretty much the same with the game beginning automatically once the player selects their bet using the player options on the screen.

After the cards have been dealt, the players will decide on how they wish to proceed. They will either choose to “hit” which means take another card or “stand” which means stay with the cards they have. A player can hit more than once in order to get as close to 21 as possible or until they bust, in which case they lose. Once it’s the dealer’s turn, the dealer will need to follow the rules to proceed, and adhere to certain rules, such as standing on 17. Players want to be sure they understand all the rules for a particular table ahead of time. If they are playing online, they also want to be clear on the rules for that particular game.

Double Down: players may choose to double the amount of their bet and receive just one more card. Some casinos will have specific rules regarding doubling down.

Split: If the player’s first two cards are the same denomination then they may choose to place a second wager equal to their first and split the pair. When a player does this they will be playing two hands, rather than the single hand they were originally dealt.

Insurance: If the dealer is showing an Ace, then the player may be able to take Insurance. This is basically a bet that the dealer has a card with a 10 value facing down. Insurance is for half of the amount of the original bet and it pays 2 to 1 if the dealer does end up having a blackjack.

Blackjack is a simple game to learn and an entertaining and exciting one to play. Blackjack is one of the most popular games both in the land-based and online casinos.
