Stencil Monoprint - Group of Seven

Hi everyone.  This month we are looking back at an older technique, Stencil Monoprint.  It's an easy and fun technique that creates lovely backgrounds or main panels for cards.

Please check out the details for the technique and link to videos on the blog ...

* * * * *
My first card above uses powdered inks (Brushos - Terra Cotta, Orange, Leaf Green, Light Brown).  Using powdered inks or sprays allows me to make a positive (print) and negative (monoprint) from just one application of colour (see pictorial below).  I used one of my favourite stencils (Joyful Sunflower - The Crafter's Workshop), which was a gift from a sweet friend several years ago.  I'll share my print card at another time.

Sending the above card to Just Us Girls #746 - Stencil Week.

* * * * *
For my second card, I used powdered inks again (Brushos - Lime Green, Leaf Green), along with the Wander & Find stencil (Carta Bella - retired).
I stamped the Pop Sunflower image onto mixed media paper, watercoloured using Distress Inks, fussy-cut, and popped it up over my Stencil Monoprint background.  That little bird is so sweet! :)

* * * * *
Here is a pictorial of my process of making the Stencil monoprints with powdered inks.

   1) Stencil on mixed media paper        2) Brushos sprinkled over stencil

                            3) Right card - Water misted over      4) Left card - Inky stencil flipped onto
                                 Brushos (positive print)                       second card / blotted with
                                                                                                     paper towel  (stencil monoprint)

                                  5)  Stencil removed                               6) Left to Right -
                                       / paper left to air dry                            Stencil monoprint/ Print
                                       (finished Stencil Monoprint)

Here's what I learned when I experimented with this technique ...
  • This is an easy technique that works with lots of different mediums, substrates, and stencils.
  • It can be a main panel or background - so lots of flexibility
  • Use a generous amount of water so the colour spreads, especially when using powdered inks.
  • Important to remove the stencil quickly after spraying with water.  This prevents the water from spreading under the stencil and loosing definition of the design.
  • You can create several panels with one application of ink.  Repeat adding inked (wet) stencil onto card and blotting with paper towel until there isn't any colour left.  First stencil monoprint will be the strongest colours, each monoprint will be lighter in colour than the previous.

Thanks for stopping by!

Dahlia Birthday

Hi everyone.  Today's card is a lovely bouquet of flowers (Dahlia Bunch - Pinkfresh Studio), with matching die.  I stamped in black ink onto mixed media paper and watercolour using my Zig markers.  It was fun to pull them out ... I haven't used them very much lately.

I die-cut the image and added it over a panel embossed with the Vine Canopy embossing folder (SSS).  To finish I added a simple sentiment banner using a retired stamp set from Stampin' Up!

Sending this card to a few challenges:
1) Darnell's IDEAS Sept. Challenge - Anything Goes.  First time using my Zigs after a LONG break. :)
3) Just Us Girls #745 - Mood Board.  So happy to be playing along.  I don't get to play very often because of the short timeframe for the challenges, but this just worked out perfectly.  Thanks for the fabulous mood board challenge Ina!!

Guest Designer at PBSC - Reminder

Today I've used a lovely tulip image called Overflowing (31-062) from Penny Black.  I have paired with the Geometric Frames (51-649) die.  I like how this frame looks like a window box when it's filled with flowers. :)

I used the Diagonals (65-019) - Penny Black embossing folder with light green card stock for the background.  I then stamped the pretty tulips in black and heat embossed with clear before watercolouring with Distress inks.

I popped up the box of flowers to add dimension and added a simple sentiment (Happy Snippets 30-358) in black ink.

Close-up ...
I hope you'll check out the challenge and play along, if you haven't already done so.  Thanks again to Helen and the team for choosing me to Guest Design this month!!

Thanks for stopping by!

My Favourite Colours

Hi everyone.  When I saw the challenge at Just Us Girls #738 (orange and hot pink), I just had to play along as this is my favourite colour combo! :)   I also am playing along with Seize the Birthday #288 - Tic Tac Toe (I chose the right column ... stencil-dots-sentiment without the word "birthday").  My sweet friend Bonnie is Guest Designing at both challenges --- congrats dear friend!!

And it's Monday, which means it's a new IDEAS Challenge - Inks with Darnell.

I started by sponging the Honeycomb Stencil (Penny Black) with Spiced Marmalde ink.  I just wanted a bit of pattern at the bottom and up one side.  Next, I stamped my flower (Nature's Magic - Altenew) in black onto mixed media paper and heat embossed in clear.  I added dashes of colour from my Distress Markers (Picked Raspberry and Carved Pumpkin) to each petal and then used a wet paint brush to spread the ink.  I used Lost Shadow Distress ink for the leaves and then die-cut the flowers and set them aside.

A simple sentiment (Super Day - Penny Black) is stamped in black and heat embossed in clear on the stenciled card front.  I then used more Carved Pumpkin ink (diluted) to splatter the background (dots!). :)  I popped up the flowers over top.

Thanks to all three of these challenges for inspiring me to make this card.  I had fun! :)

Guest Designing at Penny Black Saturday Challenge

Hi everyone.  I'm excited to be Guest Designing this month at PBSC!!  Thanks so much Helen!

The challenge is always Anything Penny Black Goes, with an optional theme, which is Flowers.  I'm using one of Jill Foster's sketches from "Permission to Play" - video #10.  I LOVE the Posted stamp and had a lot of fun making this card.  I can see me using it a lot for Christmas cards too. :)  Thanks again Jill!

The background is Seaglass card stock (Simon Says Stamp), dry embossed with Noted (65-005) from Penny Black.  I used Salvaged Patina ink to add a little colour over the raised design.

The postage outline is stamped in Shadow Gray Archival ink.  The inside border was masked off before stamping the daisies from Blooms 31-064 (Penny Black) in black pigment ink.  I watercoloured using Distress Re-inkers.   The image is die-cut using the matching die, Posted Cut out (51-778) and then I stamped the cancelled stamp in more of the Shadow Gray ink, popping up the panel over the embossed background.  Fun, easy card to make.

I hope you'll join us at Penny Black Saturday Challenge!

Kaleidoscope - Group of Seven

Hi everyone.  Today we are starting a new technique at Group of Seven.  I saw a beautiful card made by my friend Jenny (My Paper Epiphany - third card in post) using this technique and I'm so excited we tried it out for Group of Seven. :)  Thanks Jenny!!

Jenny's inspiration card
For the card at the top of the post, I stamped a large image in Versamark onto mixed media paper; then heat embossed with Liquid Platnium (Ranger).  I used Distress Re-inkers to watercolour the image, making sure the whole card front was covered with colour.  I believe it would be OK to leave bits of white, but not large patches of white.  Once dry, I cut the panel up into 1/2" wide pieces, rearranged them in a random order; then taped them to my card front.  These bright colours are so HAPPY!! :)

Please check out the details for the technique and link to video on the blog ...
Here's what I learned when I experimented with this technique ...
  • Tried this with a variety of stamped images and was happy with each one.  A great technique if you are looking for an arsty type of card.
  • The technique is to colour the images loosely, which I did for the Christmas cards below, but keep mostly inside the lines for my two Floral cards.  Both ways worked.
  • Also tried this with stencils and it worked great.  Best to make sure your background is coloured before sponging over the stencil.  I simply smooshed a light colour of ink.
  • Try cutting up your panel in random-sized strips for a different look
  • Great way to use some images from your stash that you've been hanging on to for a long time, but not used because they aren't "quite right".  This technique makes everything look good. :)

I had this image in my "need to finish" pile for a long time.  It's called Roses Be Happy (Stampendous - retired).  It was already watercoloured, but I used my zigs to add more colour as I find vibrant colours look awesome with this technique.  Then I cut it up into strips, rearranging them randomly and cut it into a smaller panel.  LOVE how it turned out.

* * * * *

I decided that I should try this using sponging through a stencil. :)  I smooshed the background, then sponged over the Layering Poinsettia stencil by Tim Holtz with more Distress Inks.

The stencil was removed before I sponged around the outside edge of the poinsettias and holly.  We have done this technique before and we called it Stencil Bleed (click to see our Group of Seven post)

I cut the panel in half and outlined one with a silver metallic pen.  The other panel was left as is.  It's amazing how different they look. :)  Thanks for the suggestion to try it both ways Christine!

I have done a similar technique in the past, cutting up pieces with random widths and spacing them apart a little (below ... 1) foiled piece; 2) stenciling over coloured card stock).  Here's a few alternative ways to try this technique ...

IDEAS July - Inks / Colour Mediums

Hi everyone.  This is for a very special friend for her birthday, so I delayed adding it to the IDEAS Challenge ("I - Inks/Colour Mediums") until today. :)  HAPPY BIRTHDAY DEAR FRIEND!!

I used my stamp/stencil/die from Pinkfresh Studios (already retired) to create the card above.  I started by stamping the image in Black pigment ink, setting with my heat tool and then adding stenciling with Distress Inks:  Kitsch Flamingo, Picked Raspberry, Shabby Shutters, and Peeled Paint.  I think it's just me, but I have a hard time lining up the stencils so they match the stamped image.  In the end, I only used a couple of the stencil layers to add ink with small, detail sponges.  I then went over the whole image and watercoloured, adding more ink to create shadows and depth.

Close-up ...
I die-cut the image, popping it up over a dry embossed background (Stampin' Up! - retired).  It's hard to see in the photo, but adds something special to the card.  I added a black banner stamped with white heat embossed sentiment (Simply Sentiments - Lawn Fawn).

I'm sending my card to Darnell's IDEAS July Challenge - Inks / Color Mediums.  Since it's a birthday card, I'm also sending it to Seize the Birthday #286 - Anything Birthday Goes.  Thanks to all that run these fun challenges to help me decide what to make today. :)
