DISTANCE EDUCATION

IN NURSING

INTRODUCTION
Distance education is a method of indirect
instruction, life long education or continuing
education. Distance education has opened the portal
of universalisation of education, as education has
made accessible to all respect of financial, social,
psychological condition.
DEFINITION
Distance education is defined as planned
learning that occurs in different place from
teaching, requiring real time on delayed interactive
technology and a needing a course design
supportive of students.
According to Dohman - Distance education is
a systematically organized form of self study in
which student counselling the presentation of
learning material.
HISTORICAL CHANGES
360 B.C – Plato introduced “Written world”
which enable the students to expertise and interpret
the words without facing teacher.
Middle age – Industrial revolution lead to
technologically sound learning modalities which
increased the opportunities for teaching outside
class room. Establishment of Postal services had
greater influence in delivery of education at
distance.
1873 – Home based studies delivered via radio.
1892 – Philadelphia university started distance
education programme via postal services.
1950-60 – Correspondence courses delivered via
text book, multimedia, radio and television.
1962 – The first school of correspondence course
was started by the University of Delhi.
1982 – First open university established in Andhra
Pradesh.
1985 – IGNOU established – First University in India which
offer only distance education and open education in various
streams.
1990 – IGNOU started offering PBBSc Nursing course through
open and distance mode. This programme recognized by INC.
1994 – Pittsburgh University – opened first online distance
education program on Ph.D Nursing. In USA, currently nearly
30 institutions offer Distance education courses in Nuring.
1995 – In India, enrollment of 2,00,000 students in open and
distance learning, accounting for 3% of total higher education
enrollment .
2014 – Distance education bill passed.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES
1. It aims not only in providing certificate and
degree but also help in personal growth in
training for better job.
2. Bring changes in attitude and knowledge.
3. Provide flexibility of time.
4. Make education socially more relevant.
5. Imparts latest information and skills.
CHARACTERISTICS
1. There is little face to face relationship between the
teacher and the learner.
2. There is a little oral instruction.
3. No fixed classroom or lecture room.
4. Learning is an individual basis.
5. It involves use of multimedia approach.
6. Learning is on part time basis.
7. It is now applied for teacher education program i.e.
for in service education of teachers.
FORM OF DISTANCE EDUCATION
1. Correspondence education.
2. Distance education based on multimedia.
3. Distance courses on the demand of people.
4. Distance education is known conformist and
known tradition.
BENEFIT OF DISTANCE EDUCATION
1. Balancing inequalities between age groups,
extending geographical access to education and
delivering education.
2. Providing speedy and efficient training for big
target groups.
3. Expanding the capacity for education in new and
multi-disciplinary subject areas.
4. Developing multiple competencies.
5. It is flexible.
TAYLOR’S MODELS OF DISTANCE EDUCATION
APPROACHES OF DISTANCE EDUCATION

1. Synchronous approach: The participants in the


same space at the same time in order to attain to
the material of teaching.
2. Asynchronous approach: The instruction is
delivered at different points of time usually
recorded videos, print materials, etc.
ADVANTAGES
1. Provide for an increase in access to education.
2. Study at your own way.
3. Distance education is flexible.
4. Distance education provide speedy and efficient
training.
5. Distance education is learner centered.
6. Learners can overcome social and cultural barriers.
7. Greater flexibility in location for study.
DISADVANTAGES
1. Time and frustration involved learning how to
get online.
2. Lack time between student input and feedback.
3. Occasional internet provide downtime.
4. Students must be more active and self-directed
in learning environment.
5. Occasional feeling of isolation.
FACTORS TO BE CONSIDERED IN DEVELOPMENT OF A
DISTANCE EDUCATION PROGRAM IN NURSING
ROLE OF DISTANCE EDUCATION COUNCIL

1. Lay down norms, guidelines and standards for


offering various programs.
2. Grant recognition to programs of higher
educations.
ROLE OF DISTANCE EDUCATION IN NURSING

1. Those nurses who are working in remote areas


and have no facilities for higher education.
2. Those who are unable to join regular colleges
due to various reasons.
3. Those who are already working and cannot be
relieved for the institutions because of shortage
of nurses.
TYPES OF DISTANCE EDUCATION PROGRAM

1. Open universities.
2. Dual mode universities.
3. Mixed mode universities.
STEPS TO DEVELOP DISTANCE EDUCATION
1. Access existing and required resources.
2. Inquire about accessibility.
3. Procure what is needed.
4. Develop a flexible educational program.
5. Identify the curriculum to be used.
6. Consider modification if necessary.
7. Provide training to staff, parents and students.
8. Communicate the distance learning plan and expectations to the
community.
9. Deploy resources.
10. Maintain information technology.
PROBLEMS IN DISTANCE LEARNING WITH

RESEARCH ARTICLE
“Effectiveness of distance learning strategies for continuing professional
development (CPD) for rural allied help practitioners.
Abstract:
Allied health professional working in rural area face unique challenges
often with limited access to resources. Accessing continuing professional
development is one of those challenges and is related to retention of workforce
Result:
The research returned 5257 results with removal of duplicate references
review 3964 articles titled and abstract. n=206 appeared potentially eligible
and wear scrutinized via full tax screening n=14 were included. Studies were
published between 1997 and 2016 were of varied methodological quality and
were predominantly from Australia, USA and Canada with a focus on
satisfaction of learners with the delivery method or on measures of educational
outcome.
SUMMARY
CONCLUSION

The application of distance learning are


potentially limitless. Educators are finding that
even subjects that seemed beyond its scope,
such as surgery and are now being successfully
taught in distance learning program.
