4
Interpersonal Psychotherapy - IPT

 Focuses on relieving symptoms

 Improving interpersonal functioning

 Central idea : psychological symptoms – a response to current difficulties in every day

relationships

 Addresses current problems and relationships rather than childhood or developmental

issues

 Time-limited, focused and evidence-based approach - to treat mood disorders

5
 Main goal – to improve the quality of client’s interpersonal relationships and social

functioning

 Aims to help reduce overall distress

 Provides strategies to resolve problems within four key areas

6
Four key areas :

 Addresses interpersonal deficits : social isolation or unfulfilling relationships

 Helps patients manage unresolved grief - onset of distress - linked to the death of a loved

one

 Helps with difficult life transitions - retirement, divorce, or a move

 Recommended for dealing with interpersonal disputes – from conflicting expectations

between partners, family members and close friends, or co-workers

7
 Idea of interpersonal therapy – depression can be treated by improving the communication

patterns and how people relate to others

 Techniques of interpersonal therapy –

 Identification of emotion : Helping the person identify what the emotion is and where it

is coming from

 Expression of emotion : Helping the person express in a healthy way

 Dealing with emotional baggage : Unresolved issues from past affect their present

mood and behavior - to be objective in their present relationships

8
Strengths of IPT

 A focus on relationships, communication skills, and life situations rather than viewing

mental health issues as things that occur in a vacuum,

 A structured, formulaic approach that makes it easier to track progress, and

 An ability to build a strong relationship with the therapist, which may enable the client to

test new skills

9
Weaknesses of IPT

 Less consistent and some other therapies may work better

 Its shorter timeline – not offer enough support for chronic or relapsing mental health issues

 Maintenance sessions – necessary for recurring symptoms

10
 Interpersonal therapy :
 A novel approach to mental health treatment
 Offers a new perspective on the role of relationships in life
 Empowers the person to change the way they think about and interact with others
 Helps to understand and manage emotions as well as improve relationships with
others
 Especially helpful for those grieving lost relationships or struggling to make their
relationships work
 Highly effective treatment option for people with depression – an alternative to
medication
 An effective treatment for mental health conditions : depression, anxiety and post-
traumatic stress disorder
