The Commercial Pipeline of 3D

Product Animation
What is 3D Animation?
3D Animation is rapid display of a sequence of 3D artworks or models positions in order to
create an illusion of movement.
What is an animation pipeline?
Animation workflow or pipeline is a system consisting of people, hardware, and software aligned to work in a specific sequential
order to do pre-determined tasks in a predetermined time frame, which will lead to a 3D animation product or asset as the final
output.
An Example
Let’s imagine, A Lipstick brand has reached you looking for a 3D animation for their product with following brief
:

Brand’s name : Amaranth

Product : Lipstick

Features of product : 24 hour stay, Long lasting, 6 different Color shades, Comfortable to wear

For Promotion on : Youtube

Required Length of video : 15 seconds

Attached documents : Photos of product, Logo of brand, Label of product, Brand color schemes.

To make an 3D animation in such a case 3D animator will have to follow certain

key steps in 3D animation pipeline.

Key components of 3D animation pipeline

3D animation production pipeline has three main stages:

1. Pre-production
2. Production
3. Post-production
1- What is pre-production in the animation pipeline?

When Client reaches an 3D animator for commission of product animation,

The process of creating an animation starts from Pre-Production :

Pre-production is the research, designing, and planning phase of the entire 3D project, which is split between two stages:

1) The Idea stage where we create the idea & story of our animation.
2) The Design stage where we write down the production plan & create a storyboard.

The better the pre-production phase is done, the easier the production stage will be.
Idea Generation :
Every great story starts with a brilliant idea. Thus, it is essential for a successful animation to have a solid, well-thought idea. Your idea should
generate emotion so that it creates a relationship with the audience.

Idea generation for a 3D animation is the first step in the 3D animation pipeline, Here’s how you can get a good idea for animation :

1) Look For Inspiration

2) Collect references for shots and also look for suitable audio for 3D animation.
3) Write down a script
Storyboarding
A storyboard is a non-moving visual version of the script. It basically looks like a comic book, including early ideas of camera
staging, major character poses, or scene events.
2- What is the 3D animation production process?

The production stage is where all previous efforts must pay off and transform into action.
3D Modeling:
3D modeling is the process of developing a geometric surface representation of any object in a specialized 3D software. Here we’ll be
using Blender as our software of choice.
3D Texturing:
The process of creating and applying textures (colors and surface properties) to a 3D model is called 3D texturing.
3D Rigging:
During the rigging process, a bone structure is put into the 3D object so that the animators can move different parts of the geometric
object (in character rigging, for example) as quickly and efficiently as possible.
3D Animation:
The movements of the 3D objects or characters in a scene are created during the animation stage. Animation is usually the most crucial and
time-consuming part of producing a 3D animated video.
Lighting:

Just like real-world lighting in photography or filming, 3D animation lighting is the stage at which the mood of a 3D scene or
sequence is created through light based on the pre-production designs.
Rendering:
When dealing with a 3D animation, every scene is separated and rendered into multiple frames, These frames are rendered as image
sequences in one folder. These image sequences will come together in compositing.
3- What is the animation post-production process?

At this stage, the final touches are added to the project to make it look polished and professional. Post-production artists have a
number of tools that can make up the look of a project in whatever way they want. We will be using After Effects as a compositing
and motion graphics software.
Compositing:
To make a final output, the layers rendered previously are put together again in compositing. The layering process can be as simple
as putting 2 layers together or as complex as matching hundreds of layers and adjusting their properties.
Motion Graphics & Sound :

Addition information can be conveyed through use of motion graphics like typography animation, simple
transitions, logo animations, effects, etc. Appropriate Sound is selected that plays as background audio.
Final output:
There are different options out there regarding the output format of the pipeline. However, the most common type is a digital video
which is compatible with most digital devices and can be played on the internet which is .mp4 format.
How to get started in animation production (FAQ)

1. What do I need to get started in 3D animation production?

The bare minimum is a mid-range computer (A PC or laptop with a graphic card is necessary) and some 3D animation software. Blender
is a free 3D animation software that you can use for starting out in 3D animation. You can download Blender from their official website
https://www.blender.org/

2. Do you need to know how to draw to be a good animator?

Not necessarily but it certainly helps, especially if you’re working as a smaller studio where lots of jobs in the animation pipeline are
your responsibility.

3. How can I make Animations like professionals in industry?

By practicing and mostly trial and error. Start from creating animations which inspire you most to keep yourself motivated and develop
your skills in area of your interest. Give yourself enough time to work on your project. 3d Animations can take from 5 days to
months to complete. So plan accordingly.
The Commercial Pipeline of
2D Logo Animation
What is Logo Animation
Logo animation is the process of bringing a static logo to life by adding movement, sound, and other effects.
It’s a great marketing tool that increases brand awareness and familiarity by making the logo more
memorable and engaging.
Workflow of 2D Logo Animation
Concept > Storyboard > Preparation of Logo > Animation > Sound design > Rendering
Concept for 2D logo animation
Logo animation is a creative and effective approach to conveying the personality and uniqueness of your
brand.

For example, Amazon is a brand that delivers product to their customers and they need to present that

through their brand identity then Logo animation can be a medium.

Storyboard for 2D logo animation
The process begins with the creation of a storyboard that specifies the intended movement and effects of the
logo.
Preparation of Logo for animation
For the logo to be animated it first has to be converted to editable format, basically converting it to png or vector
format and breaking it down into layers that are to be individually animated. Photoshop can be used for breaking
down the logo into individual layers.
Animating the Logo using effects
After effects offers graph editor & wide range of effects for animation of texts, images, vector graphics and
videos. These effects and graph editor can be used for creating eye catching animations.
Sound Design and Rendering
After the Animation part is done, Sound adds an extra dimension to the overall video. Rendering is part where the
animation is converted from After effects to .mp4 sharable format ready to be uploaded on web.
The End
