HERBAL MEDICINES
❑ Herbal medicine is the use of plants to
treat disease and enhance general health
and wellbeing.

❑ Herbs can interact with other


pharmaceutical medications and should be
taken with care.

❑ There are ten herbs that are proven and


tested to have medicinal value and
approved by the Department of Health
(DOH).

AKAPULCO
❑ A woody bush that grows wild in
the tropical climate of the
Philippines and an affordable
locally sourced herbal medicine.
❑ Its leaves have been traditionally
used to treat fungal skin infections
such as ringworms, scabies, and
eczema.

AMPALAYA
❑ Ampalaya or bitter gourd is a
widely used herbal remedy to lower
the blood sugar levels for diabetic
patients.
❑ Analgesic. The juice of Amplaya is
used to alleviate symptoms of
fever, headache and body pains.

BAWANG
❑ Bawang is a used in Philippine
herbal medicine to treat infection
with antibacterial, antiinflammatory,
anti-cancer and anti-hypertensive
properties.
❑ It is widely used to reduce
cholesterol level in blood.

NIYOG-NIYOGAN
❑ Niyog-niyogan leaves are applied to the
head to relieve headaches.
❑ Remedy for Diarrhea and Fever, ripe
fruits of Niyog-niyogan are roasted and
taken internally for diarrhea and fever
treatment.
❑ Remedy for Dysuria or painful urination.

PANSIT-PANSITAN
❑ It has long been used in Philippine traditional
medicine for its analgesic, anti-inflammatory,
anti-hyperuricemic properties, eye
inflammation, Sore throat, Diarrhea, Prostate
problems, High blood pressure, Arthritis, Gout,
Skin boils, Wounds, Burns, Skin inflammation,
abscesses, pimples, Headache
Fever ,Abdominal pains ,Renal problems,
Mental excitement disorder. 9
SAMBONG
❑ Sambong (Blumea balsamifera
L.) is an aromatic shrub long
used in Philippine traditional
medicine as a treatment for
fever, cough, headache, boils,
abdominal pain and gaseous
distention.

TSAANG GUBAT
❑ Tsaang Gubat is used as a tea to
promote overall health.
❑ Additionally, it is used as a disinfectant
during childbirth and as a gargle to
prevent tooth decay.
❑ To date, Tsaang Gubat is registered
under the Bureau of Food and Drugs
Administration as an effective herbal
medicine. 11
YERBA BUENA
❑ Yerba Buena (Mentha cordifolia
Opiz) is an aromatic herb also
known as mint, spearmint or
marshmint found in the Philippines.
❑ Its leaves have been used by our
ancestors as a tea for headaches,
toothaches, arthritis and
dysmenorrhea.

describes medical treatments that
are used instead of traditional
(mainstream) therapies.

Some people also refer to it as


“integrative,” or “complementary”
medicine.

❑ It is a form of energy medicine
where long thin needles are
inserted to specific parts of the
body to affect the energy flow.
❑ Acupuncture is believed to treat
musculoskeletal dysfunctions.

❑ Nutrition therapy approaches the
treatment of a medical condition by
providing a tailored diet for the
patient.
❑ Nutritional therapy involves the use
of specific dietary nutrients in order
to improve health.
❑ A macronutrient approach involves
tailoring and adjusting the mix of 15
ACUPRESSURE
❑ Acupressure uses the same
technique as that of
acupuncture.
❑ The only difference is that
acupressure does not use
needles but hands to apply
pressure on specific points of
the body.
