Sand Art
• This art was Originated in Puri (city in Odisha)
• Now lets dive into the origin story of sand art. Poet
Balaram Das, the author of Dandi Ramayan was a great
devotee of Lord Jagannath. Once during Ratha Yatra (Car
Festival), he tried to climb the chariot of Lord Jagannath
to offer his prayer. Since he was not allowed by the
priests of the chariot to climb it and also insulted by
them . With a great frustration and humiliation, he came
to the beach (Mahodadhi) and carved the statues of Lord
Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra and Devi Subhadra on the
Golden sand. Then there he started praying and
worshiping these statues . His devotion was so strong
and deep that the original statues vanished from the
chariot and appeared at that place where Balaram das
was worshiped.
• Not that popular as this art can be easily demolished ,so
artists mostly are reluctant to form this art.
Silver Filigree Work
• Origin- Cuttack (famous for filigree work)
This art form was introduced in India when
the Mughals used to rule India. Also known as
Tarakasi.
• Making process- Silver bricks are made into
thing sheets and wires and then worked upon.
• Tools used – Chisel , Hammer , files , Flame
torch and anvil these are the basic tools that
are required to make a excellent piece of
filigree work.
• Popularity- This art form is usually practiced
by the silversmiths to make jewellery .
Odissi
• Odissi is also referred to as Orissi in older literature. It is a major ancient Indian
classical dance that originated in the Hindu temples of Odisha. Odissi, in its
history, was performed predominantly by women. expressed ideas of other
traditions such as those related to Hindu gods Shiva and Surya, as well as Hindu
goddesses (Shaktism). The theoretical foundations of Odissi trace to the ancient
Sanskrit text Natya Shastra. It was suppressed under the British Rule.
• Odissi is traditionally a dance-drama genre of performance art, where the
artist(s) and musicians play out a story, a spiritual message or devotional poem
from the Hindu texts, using symbolic costumes, body movement, abhinaya
(expressions) and mudras (gestures and sign language) set out in ancient
Sanskrit literature. Classical Odia literature & the Gitagovinda set to traditional
Odissi music are used for the abhinaya. Odissi is learnt and performed as a
composite of basic dance motif called the Bhangas (symmetric body bends,
stance). It involves lower (footwork), mid (torso) and upper (hand and head) as
three sources of perfecting expression
• Traditional Odissi exists in two major styles, the first perfected by women and
focussed on solemn, spiritual temple dance (maharis); the second perfected by
boys dressed as girls (gotipuas)which diversified to include athletic and acrobatic
moves, and were performed from festive occasions in temples to general folksy
entertainment
• Modern Odissi productions by Indian artists have presented a diverse range of
experimental ideas, culture fusion, themes and plays.
• Odissi was the only Indian dance form present in Michael Jackson's 1991 hit
single Black or White
Warli Painting
• Origin- The Warli Painting tradition in Maharashtra are among the finest examples of
the folk style of paintings. The Warli tribe is one of the largest in India, located
outside of Mumbai. Despite being close to one of the largest cities in India, the Warli
reject much of contemporary culture. Warli paintings of Maharashtra revolve around
the marriage of God Palghat. The style of Warli painting was not recognised until the
1970s, even though the tribal style of art is thought to date back as early as 10th
century A.D. The Warli culture is centered on the concept of Mother Nature and
elements of nature are often focal points depicted in Warli painting. Farming is their
main way of life and a large source of food for the tribe. They greatly respect nature
and wildlife for the resources that they provide for life. Warli artists use their clay
huts as the backdrop for their paintings, similar to how ancient people used cave
walls as their canvases.
• Style - These rudimentary wall paintings use a set of basic geometric shapes: a circle,
a triangle, and a square. These shapes are symbolic of different elements of nature.
The circle and the triangle come from their observation of nature. The circle
represents the sun and the moon, while the triangle depicts mountains and conical
trees. In contrast, the square renders to be a human invention, indicating a sacred
enclosure or a piece of land. The central motif in each ritual painting is the square,
known as the "chauk" or "chaukat", mostly of two types known as Devchauk and
Lagnachauk. Inside a Devchauk is usually a depiction of palaghat, the mother
goddess, symbolizing fraternity
• Materials Used - The simple pictorial language of Warli painting is matched by a
rudimentary technique. The ritual paintings are usually created on the inside walls of
village huts. The walls are made of a mixture of branches, earth and red brick that
make a red ochre background for the paintings. The Warli only paint with a white
pigment made from a mixture of rice flour and water, with gum as a binder. A
bamboo stick is chewed at the end to give it the texture of a paintbrush. Walls are
painted only to mark special occasions such as weddings, festivals or harvests. They
make it with a sense that it can be seen by those who would take birth in future.
So this was all we wanted
to speak on various arts and literature
in the states of Maharashtra and Odisha
